    Advice to new builders:

Anyone who is nervous needs to realize that some of that is good, it keeps you alert and paying attention. I built furniture, toys and cabinets for a time and it can be unnerving to have to tackle a project you are unfamiliar with but what you have to do is try your best to educate yourself...

    Different lubricant

Guys, if you reread the OP, he starts out referencing Ballistol but the point of his post, the way I see it, is about CLENZOIL. Although he doesn't come out and ask, I believe he may be looking for opinions and info on that product. You all might be better off ending your pissing match about...

lead round balls, are they really round?

What I want to know is just what does a round ball, or conical for that matter, look like after the shooter has bounced his ramrod on it 15 times. Every time I see that, I just cringe.

    Upset with UPS

UPS is THE worst of the three main carriers. I REFUSE to send anything personal by UPS but here at work, I am forced to use them as most of my suppliere ship by UPS. They must be getting a fantastic deal from UPS because I recieve smashed and/or empty packages quite frequently. Boxes damaged and...

What does patch lube actually do?

Patch and bullet lubes give us lots of great entertainment here on the forums. I think that is their main purpose now a days. Want some real fun? Just start a thread about using Ballistol! (Is Ballistol a petroleum?) Hoooo Boy!

    Soft Pure Lead??

Well OK, so, what do folks do who are not allowed to use lead ball bay law? How do they get the gun to be accurate?

    Bullet board

I think that color stain is just fine IMO.

    Bullet board

A Forstner bit is used on detailed projects when you want a clean, precise hole. There is a pilot point to keep it from wandering and if you go slow, you can see the point poking through the other side, then turn the work over and drill from the back, eliminating any tear-out at the end...

    Soft Pure Lead??

Ive never gotten a good answer about this but why must we use pure soft lead for round ball? It's said over and over that the patch engages the rifling not the ball, so what does it matter if the lead is pure lead or wheel weights or whatever, other than maybe weight consistency or expansion on...

Using car wax as a preservative

I disagree. There are many products available that will do certain jobs other than only what they are labeled for. It's very feasible to use some of the automotive, household, and industrial products on firearms of all kinds. Even antique ones. It's up to the user to learn which ones, as the OP...

    Easier Ball Starting?

My .54 Lyman GPR has always been tough to start a patched ball at the muzzle and I think it cuts patches a bit. I dont mind using a short starter and really want to do a full coning job on it. Is there a good way to round the muzzle just a bit to make it a tad easier to start a ball? Im pretty...

    Lyman GPR Cracked Stock

I still have my cracked stock. Maybe a thin steel plate overlay would be a good fix for this.

Does anyone make stainless octagon flintlock barrels?

Even if you did get a SS barrel, you will still need to clean it soon after firing. A friend of mine loaded some .44 mag cases with 3f and they shot well but he didnt clean it for some time. It pitted his bore quite a bit and stained the metal badly.

    Lyman GPR Cracked Stock

My Investarms .54 GPR did the same thing and I thought the screw wasn't too tight. Oh well. I tried to repair it with epoxy and sand it smooth because it was lifting up a feather of wood. very sharp and caught my finger twice. I even covered the repair with several coats satin polyurethane...

Need advice on difficult loading PRB

BillKilgore, Those are not wads, they are patches, hence, "patched round ball". Wads are felt or fiber that go between powder and projectile, like tow balls or cut wool-felt button wads like "Bore Buttons" . You could also try a "Bore Button or "Wonder Wad" between the powder charge and the...
