    paper patching bullets

Yes be pedantic about your swabbing between shots. I use two damp patches followed by a dry patch. The hard black powder fouling is no good for the paper patch.

Treso ampco vs platinum lined nipple

I’m shooting a 1:17 twist 45 cal rice barrel on a renegade stock. Shooting homemade and schuetzen black powder. I can see the nipple hole eroding and getting bigger after every range session with the ampco. It wore a stainless nipple out with the quickness to the point where the hammer was...

Treso ampco vs platinum lined nipple

Looking for a little advice on the two listed nipples. It looks like I’ll get about 50 shots from the ampco nipple before it wears out. At $5.00 per nipple that equates to 12 nipples compared to 1 platinum lined nipple at $60.00. 50 shots per x 12 is 600 shots. How many shots are people...

Why is discussion of making ypur own powder frowned upon here?

The place that you seek is the cast bullets site. Muzzleloader section at the top is a thread that will teach you all you need to know. This site is pretty cool for what it is but the limitations the stazi put on open discussions of the means of producing the necessary ingredients for this...

making #11 caps, what touse as a binder

I don’t know why more guys don’t use the ww1 primer compound. This is the absolute easiest primer compound to make. One pound of each chemical will last you a lifetime. They are easily obtained on the internet at this time. Potassium chlorate, antimony trisulfide, and sulfur are the 3...

making #11 caps, what touse as a binder

My mixture of acetone and Duco has been sitting on my bench for months with no notable changes or loss of function.

making #11 caps, what touse as a binder

I started out using acetone mixed with shellac and the results were just so-so. The mixture was still somewhat fragile. I switched to acetone with duco cement and it works much better. Can’t help you with the ratio as I had a glass seasoning bottle (Paul prudone blackening seasoning) half tube...

Glad I got a Cap making kit

I hot glued an old small rifle primer cup to a bamboo skewer to act as a scoop. One cup full per cap. Hold the empty formed cap in one hand and gently tap the full cup over it. Sometimes you miss. I do this over a piece of paper so the spills get reused. The now full cap is put into an empty...

Glad I got a Cap making kit

I got my potassium chlorate and antimony trisulfide from skylighter website. I already had finely ground sulfur at home for my blackpowder manufacturing. Get as finely ground chemicals as you can. You will need a good balance to weigh out your chemicals. The ground glass is not necessary to...

    Cap maker

Buy the cap maker because who knows what’s coming down the proverbial pipe. You will need 3 easily obtainable chemicals to make the composition for your caps(antimony trisulfide, sulfur, potassium chlorate). A pound of each will likely make enough caps to last you a lifetime. I would discuss...

    Missouri Lead

There is oxygen in the ground, oxidation does occur in the dirt. By your reckoning then steel won’t rust underground? Ever dug a civil war bullet? All nice and oxidized underground.

    Missouri Lead

Look at the patina on the lead in the picture from eBay. That is thick white lead oxide like you see on civil war bullets. Notice the lack of patina on the exposed areas of the painted one. Specifically at the bottom of the letters that wouldn’t have been hit by the plow.

    Pietta 1851 navy hammer strike

I took my 36 cal 1851 out yesterday for a short range session. I’m using homemade black powder and homemade percussion caps. The pistol is wonderfully accurate and a joy to shoot. Here’s my dilemma: the first two cylinders will fire with every hammer strike no problem. The 3rd cylinder will...

Round ball patch size and accuracy

I’m talking diameter not thickness here. I’ve read where the accepted view is that patch size doesn’t affect accuracy. What say you guys? I got out to do some shooting a few days ago: tc hawken 50 cal, 80gr by weight homemade black powder, .490 round ball, spit lubed pillow ticking. I cut...

    Pre-Lubing patches with mink oil

I don’t know about mink oil but a mix of beeswax and olive oil severely weakened my pillow ticking pre lubed patches to the point of failure.

    Making Charcoal

The recommendation for willow charcoal would be the new growth up to about 3” in diameter. Black willow is apparently the desired species of willow. It can be cooked green or dried. Remove the bark before cooking.

    Tc hawken replacement nipple

So the current nipple on my new to me hawken is functional but seems to have been filed down a little. I plan to do quite a bit of shooting with this thing so I’m going to need some replacements. I understand that I need 1/4 x 28 threads on the replacement nipples. Which nipples would you...
