WANTED that kit you have and can't get around to finishing.

I get it, both of my kits came to me second hand, ready for the next one.

    .36 Caliber Fans?

For small game in CT I can substitute a .36 muzzleloader for a modern .22. I would love to find a .36. For deer we have a .45 minimum.

    Lyman GP kit

I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the metal finish. The “cold blue” I did on the T/C came out kind of light and uneven, but ended up looking ”aged”, I like it and it shoots good. So I left it. Plum brown vs rust brown is what I’m tossing back and forth. The oil/wax finish on the...

    About carving on originals

I would think it’s like most tools or armor /weapons we see from history. The daily use, munition grade, common man items were not usually highly decorated and so pretty much used and disposed of or in the case of metals, probably recycled. The ones that ended up getting preserved were the...

    Lyman GP kit

Making progress, refining the lines. It’s starting to feel very nice in the hand and balance is just about right. Getting hard to resist the urge to sneak it to the range. Not sure about metal finish yet. I see a flintlock in the near future. Need something to build when this is done.

What Do You Look For In A Stock Blank?

How you orient the grain in a blank is the key, you want the grain to ”follow” the lines of the wrist not “cross” the wrist. Much easier to visual. I added a picture, see the grain lines running down the length of the wrist, that’s good, if the lines were going more uphill and crossing the...

    I Have "Endless" Time...

Step one is learn to sharpen a chisel and a plane. You can practice on garbage wood, but really soft woods won’t work the way hardwoods do. Use at least poplar. My mentor (47 years ago) taught me if you can’t do it with a hand tool, a power tool will just screw it up faster. And measure 3...

    Lyman GP kit

I’m following pretty much the same lines, I like the little tear drop shape on the lock panels on the original I looked at. I’m still undecided on finish, but I have plenty of time to figure it out, and it’s usable in the white. It has the 1/60 barrel, I’m getting excited

    Lyman GP kit

It’s new to me. I was in the right place at the right time. The catalog in the box is 2005.

    Lyman GP kit

The rough work is done, working on cleaning up the metal, getting the final shape, details. Trying to sort of maintain the shape of a rifle in a museum I found pictures of.

Thank you for the invitation. We have the facilities at my club and we at one time had regular events. Be nice to have multiple options in the state again, we have enough clubs.
