    Davy Crockett King Frontier

Got to see Fess Parker in a production of "Oklahoma" on an in-the-round stage. The audience was circled around the stage and the stage itself would turn very slowly throughout the show. This allowed everyone to have a good view at some point during the production. I sitting on the aisle as he...

    Fire starting

Someone mentioned oakum earlier but with a different spelling. If it's the same thing as what I know of as oakum, it is typically made with tar and is used to fill in the cracks of log lean-tos and other cabin type structures to block the wind. If it's the same thing, I'm sure the tar will...

The average stair-wall in most every castle or stateley home in Scotland.....

Saw the same thing while in Scotland this past September. One wall was in King James V castle in Stirling. The other was a "replica" wall in the cafeteria building of the ruins of a castle on the Isle of Skye. That's all for now. Take care and until next time....be well. snapper

    Pine needle hat

No. The green needles have acted just like the dry, brown ones. They've held up surprisingly well. My wife and I operate a small B&B and I made a large basket that we use to serve muffins in. It's been in use now for almost 2 years and it's still holding up well; even with all the handling...

    Pine needle hat

@waksupi - Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I've been gone since Aug. 22nd and haven't had access to a computer so didn't see your question until this morning. So, with that said, I've used both green & dry needles. When I collect my needles I only take those I find on the...

    Pine needle hat

The instructions I had said to collect the needles (I use red pine) and then place them in the freezer for a few days to kill any bugs in them. I just dampened them again before using them to make them pliable again. That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well. snapper

    Pine needle hat

Nice looking hat! I've made many small baskets over the years but never a hat. You're an inspiration. I might have to attempt that as a winter project. Lots of needles come down in our fall rain storms so there's a good supply of raw material all around. That's all for now. Take care and...

    Cleaning with Tow

Someone asked about where you can source tow in an earlier post. To the best of my knowledge, JAS Townsend sells it. I think it's with their fire making supplies. Might be worth a check. That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well. snapper

    Three knives of the longhunter

If you're still looking for a quality knife maker, put Ken Hamilton into your favorite search engine. Ken lives outside Augusta, Maine and he's been making knives for years. I portray a trader at various living history locations and many of my French, English & Dutch knives have been made by...

Jim & Barbie Chambers Where Are You?

HOA - Home Owners Association...the bane of many gated and/or private communities. Since I don't golf, I doubt I'll ever deal with an HOA. Your mileage may vary. Until next time...be well. snapper

    Leggin and moccasin how to

No expert here but a couple of things I've learned along the way... 1. If your mocs stretch out too much, you can always resew the seam and take them in. If you cut them too small, and they don't stretch to your foot, well...you've just made potential mocs into small pouch leather instead. 2...

What did I do to get kicked off?

Why did my laptop work in my basement workshop and then not turn on again when I went upstairs? Why did my TV's cable connection work last night when I turned it off and wouldn't come on again this morning until I rebooted the system? These are the vagaries of the computer age and it doesn't...

    How old are ya?

I'll be 70 next month (April, 2023). Began in 1976 with a CVA Kentucky flintlock kit. Took a long break due to life taking over and got back into things when I joined a living history unit 2007. Until next time...be well. snapper

War films set in the (pre-Revolution) 18th century?

It's not about military conflict but I think you'd enjoy "Black Robe." It follows a Jesuit priest as he leaves Montreal and goes into the bush with his Native guides. Well done and follows reports from the Jesuit Relations. That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well. snapper

Thanksgiving Traditions That People Don't Understand

@kje54 - My White Castle adventure was back in the 60's. I have no idea where in DC it was actually located. All I know is we walked from restaurant to restaurant looking for a place to eat, only to be turned away due to every table being full. We saw that White Castle on a corner and decided...

Thanksgiving Traditions That People Don't Understand

Not a tradition but one year when I was a kid we were in Washington, DC for Thanksgiving. Don't know who was responsible but neither of my parents made a reservation for a restaurant. We ended up eating our Thanksgiving dinner in a White Castle. To this day I can't sit at the table without...

Where’s the best place to buy kinnickkinnick?

Take a look at the website for Wandering Bull. They are located in Warner, NH and have a product called "woodland blend smoke mix" that is found under their Botanicals/Herbals section. That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well. snapper

    Recent NYS Firearms Law

As of yesterday, on the local news, the Assemblywoman from the Utica/Rome area, Maryann Buttenschon, was interviewed. She spoke about the new bill she is introducing to exempt living historians & re-enactors from this new bill in NYS. It sounds promising so I'm hoping this gets cared for...
