Help Choosing a Trade Gun Kit

How are the Sitting Fox barrels? I would like to build a 20ga Fowler, but I seem to remember reading that Sitting Fox barrels are not swamped.

I bet it’s supposed to have a reed stem.

    Wild foods

My grandma used to make chokecherry jelly. It was quite a treat. She used to also can wild plums and use them for pastries. Morel mushrooms and wild asparagus were a big deal too when I was a kid. And we used to eat a lot of wild mulberries right off the tree, but I don’t recall anyone ever...

    Shimming a Dovetail?

The socket idea is brilliant! In the past I’ve used a center punch to raise some metal on the bottom of the dovetail, but this looks a lot easier.

How do you store your flints?

I’ll go one better than the Crown Royal bag. Mine are in a Blanton’s bag :) I’ve been thinking of making a new shooting pouch with 3 or so small interior pouches sewn into it, to hold flints. Maybe also a loop or two for a turnscrew and a knapping hammer. Kind of like a flint wallet built...

    Tiger Stripe Maple

Most kit makers other than the mass produced ones like Traditions and Pedersoli offer the option to upgrade the wood. I just finished my Kibler Colonial and had him upgrade the stock to extra fancy maple.

    Reference book for pouches?

Can anyone recommend a book with good pictures of original shooting pouches, especially pre-1800?

Lee molds, why I like them.

I've had very good luck with Lee molds and own maybe 8 or 10 of them. They heat up quickly so you can start casting sooner, they drop bullets easily, and the multi-cavity molds aren't as heavy as an iron mold. Plus, they're cheap 🙂

    Frizzen back finishing?

I cleaned mine up with a file, then Emory cloth and wet/dry sandpaper to 400 grit. I then buffed it with my Dremel and a cloth wheel before finishing with Oxpho Blue.

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

I hadn’t thought of potassium pergamanate. I’ve used it on wood before and it does darken it nicely.

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

So here’s the next question…when stored in the rifle, threaded tip in or out?

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

I used the aquafortis that Kibler sells. No adverse effects that I’ve seen…but it’s only been a couple hours.

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

I ended up with a nice color on my ramrod using AF. It still seems to flex nicely, but I also applied a coat of Tried & True oil varnish right after blushing so maybe that restored the wood if it got dried out.

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

Thanks, I’m just going to go with aquafortis all over the entire rod and then oil it.

Is a spiral striped ramrod correct?

I’m finishing up my Kibler Colonial rifle and trying to decide what to do with the ramrod. I’m tossing around the idea of a spiral stripe. Would that be correct for a rifle of this type (1760-1770’s Virginia)?
