Broken Main Spring - Where can I get another?

looks to me like it's a Chambers Early Ketland. If so, you can get a replacement from TOW for $25.50. Or you can call the folks at Chambers and order one.

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Scott, at Colerain, once told me that to tight a barrel inlet could have an adverse effect on accuracy. I don't know if bedding can have that effect or not. I read about a lot of builders who do bed them. Back in the day (and to this day) a lot of gunsmiths would get a good fit on the side...

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

Only change one variable at a time when working up a load. Charge, patch, powder. If you change more than one, you won't know which variable had the effect. Might as well throw rocks with your eyes closed. But if you change only one, then you can see that effect it has.

Flintlock accuracy and need help finding load

If you don't know whether or not you're flinching, then you probably are. When I sight a gun in, or test a load, I always shoot from the prone position. It has always worked better for me that way. I don't use a rest under the breech of the gun; and my sandbag out front is placed about three...

    About your hunting rifles

My hunting rifles. Both built from a blank by myself. "Miss Sally", my Southern Mountain Rifle, has a 44" swamped Colerain barrel in .50 caliber. The lock is a Chambers Late Ketland. She's my primary hunting gun, and has helped put deer meat in the freezer. The early styled plain gun has a...

    Vent hole location?

If you haven't bought it, I wouldn't. Based on what little I see, the builder did a pretty poor job with inletting and architecture... aside from lock and touch hole placement. I imagine the rest of the gun follows suit. I also can't imagine why someone would sell their favorite deer hunter...

Question for the many builders about lock finish

I don't polish my locks, but I do spend a lot of time on them with files, sandpaper down to 220 grit, and purple ScotchBrite. Here are photos of a Chambers Late Ketland locks, one not finished, but ready to inlet. One as it comes from Chambers. And one on a gun. And the other as it comes...

    Just Off The Bench

Thanks. It's a journey. It always takes several attempts, to get the color that's in my head for the piece... or as close as I can get to it.

Do you name the guns that you build?

Sometimes a gun gets a name... but most don't. It just comes or it doesn't. I have a trade gun that I assembled from a North Star kit several years ago; but I didn't name it. Nor would I, because I didn't build anything. Kits are a process of fitting, assembly, and finish... but not...

How many shots in a row without picking or wiping pan ?

I don't know. I wipe them, with my thumb after every shot. Then I wipe my thumb on my pants (or leggings). It's just of the routine of loading and shooting.

Does this look right to you ?

Unfinished barrel. Trenches in the muzzle. Ugly-d up sight. Black, streaky mess on the nose cap. And what looks like an anemic finish on the wood. Whoever did that created a pricey piece of junk. But it is redeemable... if these are the only unsightly features. My guess is the rest of...

    Just Off The Bench

Might not have described my process well. I don't blush between coats. I let each coat of acid and nitrate dry before applying the next on, but I only blush once...in this case, after the last coat had dried. Blushing is heating to create a chemical reaction, causing the wood to turn dark...

    can I flame blue lock?

I've built several guns... but before I'd try something like that on a lock, I'd get a piece of mild steel bar to practice on. If I'm unsure of what I'm doing, I'm certainly not going to chance something like that on a new lock. Learn how to do it first.

    Just Off The Bench

I don't know her weight, as I don't have a scale. But she is light!. My .50 cal southern rifle has a Colerain B weight barrel, 44" long, and this gun feels a pound lighter. My .50 is is a nice slim gun... but she feels like a post immediately after handling this one.

    Just Off The Bench

Forgot to mention that I rubbed it back with purple ScotchBrite after blushing. It didn't take very long, with this wood, to expose the running grain to where I wanted it.

    Just Off The Bench

This piece of wood was a little resistant to taking stain. I experimented four times before getting what I wanted. I ended up with two coats of tannic acid, and one coat of iron nitrate. I let the stock dry between coats, then blushed it all. After that came a coat of LMF Maple stain...

    Just Off The Bench

I just finished this left-handed Southern Mountain Rifle for a friend, and thought I'd share it. The barrel is Rice's Squirrel barrel; which is just 13/16" across the flats at the breech, and makes for a very slim rifle. This barrel is 44" long, and .40 caliber. The L&R Durs Egg lock received...
