    Idaho Muzzleloader

Very often reducing powder charge can raise POI.Muzzle has longer to rise. Such was my logic at a musket championship where military iron sight had to be used at all distange.I reduced to 35 grains 2Fg to get my Colt musket on target at such short range. Also set the West Coast record at 200...

Need Guidance on Damaged Cherry Corners Lock Hammer on Older Contemporary Hawken

My first ever Hawken rifle I built in 1974 from Cherry Corners parts. Ithaca bought them, then several others since. The Uberti's Santa Fe (Kit Carson) Hawken is the same design and latest owner. Great Western sold them for a while. Check with VTI for parts. FWIW, my kit came with a hammer for 1...

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

THE true Hawken Rocky Mountain rifle was and is a unique design. Alas, many commercial makers have labeled and marketed their cheapened versions as "Hawken" or Hawkins rifles. The most authentic commercially available Hawken looking rifles were offered by Browning and the Lyman Great Plains...

    Why 60 Grains?

The lighter charge is best for short range target work. The desired effect on men was more to wound than to kill. Actually makes more effective results considering the men required to care for the wounded. Bloody business this.

    UK Park Rifle

Muzzleloading English pistols are, by and large, beautiful. However when we get into cartridge (semi-auto) pistols, that's another kettle of fish.

    St. Louis Hawken recoil

3f is a (small) part of your problem. I suspect holding the butt loose on your shoulder is also. My routine load is 100 grns 2fg in my 9 lb Hawken. Only had one recoil "episode"...double-loaded and fired from the bench. OUCH! Got the attention of everyone on the firing line!

Question for the "old guys"...Is it just me or are there others?

I'm 77. Been making chips and parts out of metal since I was about 10. Have the old Atlas to this day. Made my first REAL ml rifle, a HAWKEN (NOT Hawkins!) from Cherry Corners parts in 1974. Lots of prizes won, still have it! Cannons, too. From bb bore to BB (Bowling ball!) Love my time in the...

    Lyman Guns

\If one wants better balance and looks, why not go on and taper the barrel a bit? Even 1/16 inch looks and feels much better. Of course, one could also shorten a few inches, too.

WANTED Sante Fe or Ithaca Hawken

Actually, gentlemen, I believe Navy Arms (an importer) never made any guns at all, but did contract with various manufacturers to produce guns marked with Navy Arms' name stamps. The Navy arms Hawken was acquired from Ithaca who acquired it from Cherry Corners Gun Shop. Whether THEY actually...

WANTED Sante Fe or Ithaca Hawken

both are basically identical, as both started out as a kit of parts from Cherry Corners. Went to Ithaca, Western, Navy arms, winding up at Uberti. Built my .54 in 1974; won lots of prizes with it; and still have it as my favored hunting rifle.

I tried to buy a Whitworth barrel from a guy in Oz, but doing so proved almost impossible. Good luck.

WANTED 1861 Springfield rifle musket repro

My best and best shooting 1861 repro was made by Miroku and marked Navy Arms. I set a 200 yard record with it around 36 yrs ago in Oregon. Wish I still had it. I now have a wonderful re-issue was made by the Colt black powder division (under Anthony Imperato, now president of Henry gun co)...

    Cherry stocks

put it in a box large enough to hold it with at least several inches clearance all 'round. Put ammonia in there with it. Maybe a long pan or a few. Close the box and let it sit in any warm room or in the sun (speeds up the action). Check every few hours to monitor progress. Let it air out when...

    Soft Pure Lead??

I've shot many lead & lead alloy balls & bullets. In every case I've tested, the softer the better. Balls & Minie` balls, pure lead, both with appropriate patch &/or lube. Bullets 40:1 alloy, with proper lube. ALL with tight fit to bore. I even show some 54 cal swaged round balls with tight...
