    Mowrey/ Leman

I've read that Mowery made some Leman style rifles before making the Allen & Thurber style he's better known for (I don't recall the source for that).

    Sizing conicals

I use the Lee push through dies, usually with a half beeswax/half olive oil soft lube that the cast bullet has been dipped in. You may need to size in steps using more than one die if the mold casts large. For the Pedersoli Tryon Creedmore .451 I have one mold that casts .452 and I can size in...

    Rifling confusion

A TC Hawken flintlock .50 will have a 1-48 twist factory barrel with grooves .004 deep if I recall correctly. It should shoot from a .490 patched round ball up to about a 300 grain greased maxi type bullet. A pure round ball gun will often have deeper grooves and a slower twist (say 1-60), a...

After reading this I realized that, of my 10 muzzleloaders, I haven't fired four of them yet. maybe this will be a better year.

    Question on flintlock builder?

I have a percussion target rifle by Dave R. Taylor of Little Hocking, Ohio. Nice wood, german silver furniture, false muzzle, .50 with a 1-48 twist, Lyman rear sight, hooked butt plate, looks nearly new. At the time I bought it there was also a lighter flint rifle by him, probably best described...

    Any more non-hunters out there?

I haven't hunted since college, now I just shoot paper. Happy to discover that at 55 years old I'm apparently the youngest person on here :)

Need assistance in identifying new rifle

Muzzle is turned for a guide bullet starter (no holes for the pins on a false muzzle). A hunting/target rifle, the stock style is from the northeast US. It may have a faster twist for a picket bullet. H.V. Perry rifles have a similar stock style I think.

New To Black Powder - Mowrey

I need to get my mowrey out of the back of the safe and take it to the range.

    Black powder power

The old Lyman Blackpowder handbook shows a 70 grain 3f powder charge with 265 grain minie bullet at about 1350-1600 feet per second from a .45 caliber 1-66 test barrel, depending on barrel length and powder brand.

    Two-band Enfield

As I understand it, there are 3 generations of Parker Hale muskets - 1st all English parts, 2nd English stock and lock, Italian barrel, 3rd all Italian parts. Barrel size tends to run large in the 2nd generation, I have a 2nd generation 2 band Enfield and use a .580 minie bullet. I think 1st...

    Casting newbie.

When I was a kid I saw the result of lead splatter from water getting in it during a lead soldier casting session - I use a full face shield, jeans, leather gloves and button a long sleeve flannel shirt all the way up.

    Mowrey Rifle Nipple Thread

The later ones I know are 1/4x28, I've measured the one that came in the rifle and I think it's 1/4x32, but wonder if the original was replaced by an incorrect one.

    Mowrey Rifle Nipple Thread

Does anyone know what the nipple threads should be for a early brass framed Mowrey rifle, serial number 52xx and stamped Olney Texas, should be? Most catalog references say 1/4x 28, but the one that came with it looks more like 1/4 x 32.

    Is it a curable disease??

'I found a cure. If you limit yourself to the number of slots in the safes and gunracks (all mine lock) you reach a cap. ' Worked for me until I bought the 'muzzleloader only' safe. It's amazing what you can fill if you try. And the checkbook holds out.

Expected accuracy from Efield rifled musket

The .580 minies from Track + 60 grains pyrodex RS + excessive amounts of TC bore butter = 4 shots touching at 25 yards. I'm still going to try paper patching some .575 minies up to .580 since I already have that mould.

Expected accuracy from Efield rifled musket

I'm going to try some .580 minies from Track of the wolf. I ran across an old thread in a forum that some of the barrels ran .580-581.

Expected accuracy from Efield rifled musket

Current plan is cast a few more .575 minies and paper patch them. Maybe a miracle will occur.
