Vernier Sight on a Traditions 50 cal

You might add a vernier tang sight to your Traditions and try soft lead maxi balls, it may get you out farther at lower cost, but likely not near 300 yards. Somewhere to start without too much added expense.

Vernier Sight on a Traditions 50 cal

300-400 yards you’d be looking for something like a 1-20 twist barrel in .40 or .45 caliber with a 400-500 grain bullet of soft lead sized to bore size with about a 60 grain 3f or maybe a 80 grain 2f powder charge with a vernier tang sight. Look at the specifications for a Pedersoli Gibbs it’s...

Vernier Sight on a Traditions 50 cal

A vernier tang will help at longer ranges, plus have the increased elevation needed to lob the bullet into the target. Also banish the thought of an inline, we will not speak such blasphemy here 😀

Vernier Sight on a Traditions 50 cal

What distance are you wanting to get out to? A slow twist usually is best with round balls, minie bullets or short conicals, none of which really efficient at long range. You might have a fast twist barrel made to fit your Traditions stock and hardware. I know Oregon barrel company makes drop in...

    Unknown rifle

I think it might be a German Turner rifle, a civilian target rifle with some military features (such as the octagon barrel turned round at the muzzle for a bayonet to mount) for shooting competition. I've seen a article on them some time in the past.

    Minie Ball Help!

You might consider ordering some pin gauges, .575, .576, .577, .578, .579, .580 to check your actual bore size. Travers Tools has them online for about $4 each plus shipping I think.

Problems I have had with, and thoughts on Pedersolis I have owned .

I have two Tryon .50's, a Tryon Creedmore .45, and a Mortimer Whitworth .45 by Pedersoli and they've all been fine. I have had to order a part from Italy and the girl there helped get the payment problem squared away. I think parts can be ordered online now with a US credit card. Side note...

Is it necessary to size bullets

Probably not depending on bullet type. A maxi type bullet should slip into the bore up to the oversized top band which is then started into the rifling and the bullet pushed down onto the powder. Some bullets are parallel sided without an oversized top band and as long as the as cast bullet...

Oh the Chains that Bind Us

Since I only shoot on the range I have a plastic toolbox with earmuffs, glasses, targets, etc. and a second plastic toolbox with muzzleloading stuff, plus a plastic folding table that’s sets right next to my station for easy loading. I also have a pickup truck 😀

All my guns have the same name so my wife only thinks I have one gun 😀

All this talk of Enfield rifles got me thinking

As I understand it there are three generations of Parker Hale Enfields 1. All English made, 2. English barrel with Italian stock, 3. All Italian made. The first two have 1-48 barrels with progressive rifling, the last has 1-66 with constant depth rifling and is stamped Italy on the trigger...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Paper patching a Parker Hale 58560 bullet in the vain hope my Parker Hale (Euroarms) 2 band enfield will shoot a group not a pattern. The trash can minie has sorta worked, but its inconsistent. The test run went well with easy loading (.573 bullet patched to .580, barrel has .581 bore 1-66...

    Hearing Protection?

The ear doctor held up four fingers and said ' mild, moderate, severe, profound', pointed to the middle and said I'd lost about half my hearing at age 55. I only shoot at the local range, and I Walker electronic ear muffs when shooting which work as well as my hearing aids do while greatly...

    Unique Sharps

I'd guess a gunsmith converted it to be a breech muzzleloader, not a normal factory product.

    Bifocal safety glasses

I've done the safety glasses with 0.5 magnification across the lenses and its helped with seeing the sights.

How to start conicals perpendicular so groups don't have flies

Steel Guitar, what rifle do you have? are you buying bullets or casting them yourself?

How to start conicals perpendicular so groups don't have flies

I suspect oversized front bands somewhat replicate the old style two part bullets, where the resistance from the harder front section allowed the softer lower section to expand into the rifling.

How to start conicals perpendicular so groups don't have flies

I think it’s the reverse, the maxi balls are similar to the Lee REAL in that the lower part of the bullet should be a slip fit into the bore with the top band oversize and engraving on the rifling ( the Lee REAL in .45 has bands starting from the ba.452 .457 .462 .467). OP’s bullets are too big...
