I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

Absolutely, I got this for one purpose, to keep track of throat erosion on an unmentionable new fangled bang stick.

That is no lie! Can be useful, can also cause undo stress!

Because I need another iron in the fire

Wow! That is some good shooting! Which bullet is that? I don't have any FFFg Old E, so I am going to try the FFg I have, I do have FFFg standard Goex, but in my BPCR rifle the 3 fouled a lot more than the 2 did. I need to find a screw for the rear sight, or a whole new assembly, as the screw...

    The first muzzleloader I owned.

Because I need another iron in the fire

I will take a picture, I have no idea what the twist rate is, I had a Lee Minnie mould, but sadly it broke. When I came into possession of it back in the early 80s, I shot the same Pyrodex Dad used in his Hawken. I planned on trying some round ball in it, at least until I get another Minnie. I...

Because I need another iron in the fire

So in addition to Dad's Hawken, I have pulled my old Civil War, Korean manufactured, replica in 58 caliber out and am trying to get it shooting as well. Just wondering what powder the 58 shooters here are using?

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I'd trust the Lyman Maxi out of the 50 to get the job done on an elk. Truth be told, if a hunter was to wait for a perfect broadside shot at 50 yards or less, I doubt an elk would survive a roundball from a 50 either. When I was a kid, I thought a 357 magnum was a perfectly good elk round, I...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I have a line on a 54 Caliber 1:66 barrel that is 15/16", it isn't much more than a rebore would cost, and it is new never installed. I am going to work with this barrel this week and shoot it again this weekend, if I can get it to hold 3-4 inches at 50-60 yards with a PRB and a 70 grain...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I don't have a spot to leave a full barrel at the moment, but a 3 1/2 hour vinegar bath definitely knocked down some of the smaller spots, the breech end just flat looks nasty. As I have said, the bore camera is a blessing and a curse.

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I know they were too, I have seen one, casts a 420 grain bullet if memory serves. I want to shoot round ball, so will likely step up to the 54 caliber. I am also wanting to work on my other neglected muzzleloader, a Korean Replica Arms 58 caliber. If I were inclined to just shoot bullets, I...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

The only reason for the Maxi is the 50 cal ball is a little light, and unfortunately most of the shots I will get will be around the 100 yard mark, not saying the ball in the right place, which key no matter what style or size projectile being used, won't get the job done, I just want to kill as...

    Black powder or Pyrodex

I haven't shot Pyrodex in a muzzleloader in over 20 years. The only experience I have with it was trying some in cartridge guns, and the chronograph told me that I should stick with the Old Eynsford. I was getting standard deviations of 40 fps or more with the Pyrodex, and single digits with the...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

An early 1970s T/C Hawken. Here in New Mexico, regs simply state 45 caliber or larger. While I know thousands of elk have no doubt been killed by a patched round ball from a 50 caliber muzzleloader, I was thinking Maxi for the insurance. I have loved this rifle since the day Dad bought it...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

This is all about next year, I drew zero tags this year, all upland and waterfowl. I really want to hunt with roundball, although with a 50 and potentially elk on the docket, I was prepared to press the Lyman Maxi mould into service. I am really seeing the effects of rising costs, even the...

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

The only problem is if I needed a "fast" follow up. That is wiping with a patch dampened with my BPCR solution and then a dry patch. If I don't do that, next shot is 6" away.

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

Would like to be able to hunt deer and elk with it. Looking at the rebore option, or maybe a drop in 54 caliber barrel. This is 55 yards with a 370gr Maxi over 70gr of FFFg last weekend.

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

So I forgot to mention, I shot with an overpowder wad today. Tried 50, 60, 70, and 80 grains. I can try some FFg next time out. I have tried JB's Bore Paste, and some fine lapping compound. I have never found fouling this hard, pretty sure if I applied pressure I could have some diamonds.

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

I spent most of my free time this week yrying to clean up the bore. It is pitted, and still has some serious carbon buildup near the chamber. I have been pretty aggressive in the cleaning, and still the patches are catching in 2 spots. I can shoot it, and it will group, but I have to keep...

    Going to cast some RB

Going to have to go even softer, the 58s are dropping at .576, given the rough bore in my "Zoave", I was hoping to get under .575. With my pistol alloy they were .5775.
