Range report with American Pioneer Powder

Is this powder still available? I haven't seen any for a very long time and was under the impression it was no longer made.

    Navy Arms mule ear rifle

The mule ear lock seems like such a good design, I wonder why it didn't get used more.

    .45 caliber Seneca

I realize no one likes to hear this, but grains are a unit of weight and should not be confused with volume. "Science is real" - and important.

    The Old H&A Underhammer Pistol

I have never seen a buggy rifle, but it's probably the same trigger and hammer. The action is really just a slot milled in a rear portion of the barrel, behind a long plug that must also form the breech plug. I think the rifle has a curved part instead of the straight barrel of the pistol.

    The Old H&A Underhammer Pistol

I did end up with one and have shot it a little. They have a slightly smaller bore than other 36 caliber guns and need a ball of about .340 inches.

can't pay with a check, so goodbye to this board.

This thread started out by saying you can't contribute to this site by check. That's not so. There is an address to send checks or money orders to, I just got a message from Meriwether about this.

    Numrich Arms "boot pistol" question.

I just wanted to say I got the pistol today and I'm real happy with it. Some people think they are ugly - maybe so - but I like stuff like that! He even included a home made holster that's pretty darn nice. It's plain and functional, just like those pistols. Not sure "boot pistol" would be...

what size ball to use ?

To me, it seems better to have a slight chamfer on the cylinders and have the oversize ball swedge itself to this size, rather than cutting a little ring off. Either way, you want the ball to seal and be tight enough to not back out with recoil.

    Shortening oh my!

I suppose this is off topic, but when I was a kid in the 1950's my mom would make pork chops and there was a lot of "pork chop oil" left in the pan for spooning on your mashed potatoes. Now, it seems like pork chops don't do that at all. Am I remembering wrong or are pigs just too skinny now?

    Are muzzleloading still antiques?

The backstrap of a Remington 1858 is part of the frame , they're all one piece.

Pedersoli Harper's Ferry pistol rear sight?

I think you can get reasonable accuracy by just lining up the front sight at short distances, like 25 yards or less. According to the Pedersoli site, it has a rifled barrel, not just smooth bored. 58 caliber in a hand gun - hang on tight!

To much is made of short arbors

Mike, regarding your posts 137 and 138 about me, I'm 76 years old and do know at least a little about Colt history, and quite a bit about American history in general. When I asked if the govt bought Colt I was making the point that the owners of any company are the ones that make the decisions...

    Numrich Arms "boot pistol" question.

I wouldn't have blamed you for coming back with a smart alex answer, I guess it was a dumb question. They would have made a heck of a muzzle brake though! Anyways, thanks for answering

To much is made of short arbors

"If you want a Gov't contract, you build what they want" That's for sure. The question would be - do you want a gov"t contract. Lots of companies have decided it wasn't worth the trouble. They could have stuck with their old design if they really thought it was better. Winchester didn't need...
