New to smoothbore and what I like for a RB loading charge

I use a 2¼ dr. (drams) 2 fg, a leather wad, .610 ball, and a moistened tow wad. The top wad can be anything, from moist paper napkins to used cleaning patches. Perhaps a bit unconventional.

    Whom Used a Frizzen Stall?

I don't use one. I don't hunt, & don't reenact anymore. The muzzleloading club to which I belong doesn't require them on the firing line.

What do you carry your fire kit in?

An old Altoids tin, (the kind made before the word Altoids was stamped & raised) fire blued. The hinges are probably not correct. I guess that box should be replaced, even though the size is ideal.

New Work: Rifled English Fowler Stocked in Maple

Even the photographs are top quality. I wanna build guns like that when I grow up. 😍😍😍

    Canvas Type Pistol Cover

Nope, never seen one for a pistol. Try making one. It can't be all that difficult.

Too many options for rifle build

I have an alternative suggestion brought on by personal experience. I always wanted to build a rifle. I failed extravagantly my first time out. The second time out, I followed the suggestion of a friend who had built and repaired several muzzle loading rifles. His suggestion was to build a trade...

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

Affordable all depends on what your budget is. If you want the least expensive briar, Dr. Grabow is about rock bottom. Prices go up from there.

    Show me your cherry

In Great Britain walnut was the preferred stock making wood (J. regia). I've been shopping from time to time for English, or European walnut & have found it to be prohibitively expensive. A less expensive substitution is American black walnut (J. nigra). One of our master builders has come up...

    Starting point for lock making

There is a set of seven books written by the late Kit Ravenshear available from Track of the Wolf which discuss everything you ever wanted to know, including the intricacies of lock making. Though I've never built a lock, I found the books very instructive & readable. It is in my opinion money...

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

I am. Don't know what is meant by in the traditional sense, however.

Ever shoot a loading rod down range? You tell me........... I won't rat you out !

Oh, the interesting things future archaeologists are going to find on abandoned gun ranges!

    MUZZLE CONING TOOL

Good for you! Now you can ditch your short starter.

    Original medium sized axe

"Yup...seen it. Seen it right off." Makes me wonder if it was 19th century smith-made in the USA axe head. Or (gasp!) a 20th century reproduction, maybe even made in the 1970s.

    Original medium sized axe

Without maker's marks, or some kind of import stamp it would be quite difficult to identify. It's pretty generic looking to my untrained eye. Could be British. Could be American. Doubtful it's French, though I could be wrong here, too.

What's your go to lube recipe?

Somewhere there used to be a sticky with members' receipts for all kinds of home brews; patch lubes, solvents, &c. Among them was something called Stumpkiller's Moose Snot which I thought was pretty good.

    Have you bought?

Yup. I bought a Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle because of it's slim lines, and because it was one of the few left handed flintlocks in existence at the time. It was .50 caliber.

    French belt bag

And all this time I thought belt bags were an English style. Thank you for posting this.

Small glass vials for holding powder charge

Test tubes from a chemistry set, perhaps?

One more idea on bore cleaning (sorry).

Hey Miner....try it out yourself and report back your findings. After all, it's just soap & water, right?

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

Exactly what I did, including the Dixie TMR. In fact, that Sam Fadala book is sitting on the bookshelf right above where I'm sitting.
