    Weighing RBs?

I started after subscribing to Dutch Schultz's Accuracy program. I can't say that there's any difference. The only reason I still do is because I have a two-cavity mold that throws two different weights, 177 and 178 for a .490 RB. If I could find a way to separate them when they come out of...

    Fake Hawken Rifle ?

It looks more like an Ohio rifle. Although I've seen photos of some that were made by them for the local trade that were of this style. Any chance it's some sort of retrofit done by Sam and worthy of his stamp? Walt

Lapping the Barrel with JB bore Paste

I usually use a three-step process. I start with Valve Grinding Compound from the Autoparts store; 100 strokes or more depending on the damage. I then move on to the JB Bore Paste which seems to be finer; 100 strokes or more. Next comes toothpaste; 100 strokes. I make patches from old jeans...

    Clocks back…

When told the reason for Daylight Saving Time, the Old Indian said, "Only the government would believe that you can cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and get a longer blanket."

Disappointed and a little ticked off

My other hobby is Treasure Hunting (Gold Prospecting and Metal Detecting mostly). I’m a Dealer for three Detector companies. This happens mostly on Facebook, but someone will say that they’re looking for something, I’ll mention that I have one, and then someone else chimes in and says how much...

Powder for Longer or Shorter Barrels.

I have often pondered this subject and even started a Thread once. In order to get a complete burn from a short barrel, would a finer powder be better? Also, what would be defined as a short barrel? 32” or less, 30” or less, 24” to 28” perhaps? Usually, when I think of a long barrel, it’s...

    Flintlocks at Local Shop

I haven't had much experience with T/C or Pedersoli flintlocks but the CVAs I've shot were rock eaters. My Issac Haines rifle with a Siler lock has 75 shots and still sparking. My English Pitol with an L&R has 50 and still going. Good Luck! Walt

    .36 or .44?

For target shooting and plinking, I prefer a smaller caliber with less recoil. My favorite is an 1849 Baby Dragoon in 31. Walt

    Flints - English vrs French

Depends on the lock. Some of the Factory locks like CVA and Traditions EAT rocks. I'm fortunate to have a ML Shop nearby so I can go in and measure them. I usually buy them a little longer. I've got about 75 shots on my rifle and 50 on my pistol. Both are still sparking. The Rifle lock is...

    Nipple wrench for Crocket rifle

I have one that looks like your top one and it works fine on my Crockett and most other rifles and pistols. I'm not sure where I got it from or who manufactured it. It might be from Traditions or Treso. The turned-down one is for a Revolver. Walt

"Thin barrel" question re: round ball

I have a 62-caliber Trade Gun. They were designed to shoot either a ball or shot. I get better accuracy with a PBR. Only 60 grains of 2F due to no rifling to overcome, Pillow Ticking, and a .600 cast ball. The first two targets are Benchrested at 13 yards. I know the last was offhand but I'm...

Black Powder Banned at my Gun Club!

As I mentioned after my original post, he did everything right. It was a Freak Accident. The Rangemasters had it extinguished quickly so that's all the damage there was. Walt
