    Flint knapping?

Have you collected any agate pieces and what size are we discussing? Gun flints are made from blades which are struck for cores. This video does a good job in showing the process.

    Advice on Swiss powder

☝️☝️☝️ In my .54 Hawken, equal powder charges of Goex and Swiss impact 6 inches apart in elevation at 100 yards.

    Question About Lighting

The best lighting aid I have purchased is a pair of magnifying glasses with three levels of illumination and interchangeable lenses. They were not very expensive and really help with the fine detail work.

    Advice on Swiss powder

Swiss is great powder and its all I have been buying recently for use in my rifles. However, it does burn hotter and generate higher velocity and I have found I get better patterns in my fowler with reduced loads of Goex. The Swiss may work just fine but you may have to back off on the powder...

    Gardening ..again

I think it would kill it from the high salt content. Edit - Plus, they say saltpeter keeps the sprout from rising..... 😄

    browning

I usually do my browning in the winter when I can keep the barrel warm next to the woodstove. I made a humidity chamber from a section of PVC pipe. The barrel lays horizontally suspended on blocks by the tang a dowel inserted into the muzzle. Damp paper towels lay under but not touching the...

    Kibler Fowler Update

A fowler would be very nice and a pistol delightful but what I'd really like is a .54 swivel breech.

    Tang bolt drill jig

Point to point drilling. This is mounted in my drill press plate. I use this for barrel and ramrod guide pins.

    How do you prime?

For hunting I've been using a small plunger flask that I can hang from the horn strap. Either 4F or null B.

    Flintlock flinching

I concentrate on the holding and squeezing. My locks are pretty fast and to be honest I'm really not aware of the pan flash anymore - unless there isn't one...

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

Its a bit amazing that Native Americans discovered this process. I make my own with sifted ashes from the wood stove.

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

Boiling the dry corn in hardwood ashes removes the outer skin from the kernel. This is how traditional hominy was made. After boiling the ash residue is rinsed away.

    Why .40 cal?

I built a .40 Tennessee a couple of years ago and it is a pure delight to shoot. Easy on powder and ball with barely any recoil. I will admit I had some qualms regarding if I really needed this caliber so I made this rifle with an interchangeable .50 barrel to help justify the project. I use the...
