What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Today I went hunting. Its the tail end of our late muzzle loading season. Took the full stock .54 Hawken this morning and a .50 Tennessee in the afternoon. I try to give all my creations an equal opportunity in the woods.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Hunting season here is now on pause until after Christmas. I took the opportunity to gold plate the front sight on my .54 Isaac Haines. Really helps sight definition in low light.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Chaga, aka tinder fungus, aka inonitus obliquus is an amazing natural tinder for fire starting. It requires no special treatment other than drying and will catch a spark very easily from flint and steel. Its actually harder to put it out once lit than to ignite. The smoke has a pleasant smell...

Now that you mention it, I agree. Had not noticed. Usually these are rather cone shaped.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I went hunting today. Its the tail end of our late ML season. Nothing but does again today however I did find a large true tinder fungus growing on a black birch. If you have ever wondered what chaga looks like - this is it.

What to do in between hunts....

    Ingredients required

The grey material is Onondaga chert. Most of the points in NYS are made from it. I have searched the local limestone quarries and all the chert has glacial fracture. The only place I know of to get knappable Onondaga is Port Colborne on the north shore of lake Erie.

What does the brain trust say?…

No help here but the workmanship is excellent. I wish my inletting was as fine. Is that a bit of brazing on the right hand hammer?

Anyone else have sore raw fingertips

Yep. I use pliers also. On thick holster leather I lay out the hole location with an over stitch wheel and then drill through the leather with a 1'16" bit.

Tom A Hawks Peep Sight Review............

The lock bolt that is offered and recommended for use as the tang screw has a 3/8" diameter, flat bottomed head. This screw provides much improved clamping force over an original, counter sunk tang screw. It is also full length and can be cut to the desired dimension.

Was hunting. I'm convinced the bucks keep a calendar. Was seeing plenty during archery season. Now that I can reach further - nothing. These are 100 yards out and no horns.

    Let's talk BALLS!

I cast mine own .490's for .50 caliber rifles. I've have great success with both Lyman and RCBS molds. And I'll also mention that my .526 6 cavity ( .54 cal.) Lee mold casts balls with virtually no sprue remnant. I don't even bother with orientation with those. I cast mine own due to better...

    Arrows vs bullets

I suggest that you design an arrow that will fit within the chamber of a revolver, with room for a powder charge, and in so doing you will answer your own question. Its simply not practical. Anything small enough to fit would have very low mass/weight affecting penetration. And...

    Two no fires while hunting

One of the best pieces of helpful information I have gleaned from this site is to store muzzle down after cleaning. I also blow down the bore before the first loading and listening for air escaping the vent or nipple.
