    What is that guy doing?

@ChrisPer, luntenschloss is matchlock in German.

    Rust protection.

@Ohio Rusty is the humidity on your side of the state so bad that not just trees, but you are Rusty as well? 😱

    Rust protection.

I'm not putting down anybody's cleaning method or choices of gun cleaner/lube/preservative. You can go 21st century or 18th century or even earlier, and if you're happy, that's all that matters. From what I've read, and I don't know much about it, sperm whale oil was the preferred gun oil a...

    What is that guy doing?

@Sam squanch, I never thought of that, but all joking aside, I think you're onto the most plausible explanation. @mortarman, could those two be Cheech and Chong's ancestors?

    What is that guy doing?

Yep, I believe you nailed it. Good one! :thumb:

    What is that guy doing?

He better be, but if not I bet from that day forward they called him 'Ol Eight Fingers.

    What is that guy doing?

Most of us have seen this drawing many times before but it puzzles me. Can anyone suggest what the guy on the right is applying to the touch hole? Unless those medieval fingers were a lot tougher than mine, and he is igniting the handgonne, I bet he will only do it once. Any ideas?

Should I or should I not?

Consider if it were an unmentionable, like a popular gun that rhymes with "clock", my guess is everyone, myself too, would shoot it without a second thought. Why?, bc it could easily be replaced for an amount most could afford. Something like what the op has I don't believe is in that easily...

Should I or should I not?

@Flintlock Whiskey this was discussed recently in the General forum under Do you actually use your expensive guns ...? Consensus of opinion was yes and no 😄 with more on the yes side. My opinion is that there isn't a right or a wrong answer. Personally, I have one pair of caplock derringers, in...

    Need something soldered, recommendations

@Blackpowderart I can't solder worth a darn so I know where you are coming from. This won't help you now, but for future tightening of those barrel lugs try this. Lay the round part of an appropriately sized ratchet socket on the lug then tap with a light hammer. This avoids the punch marks and...

September 2 Is World Coconut Day!

I used to watch Shooting USA, hosted by the late, great, Jim Scoutten. My favorite recurring segment was Impossible Shots where top shooters like Bob Munden, who also has passed, and Mr. Flintlock, would show us what can be done if you just try hard enough and practice perfectly. Because of...

    Cleaning tip for caplocks

Last week my wife asked if I had any use for some interdental picks that she didn't like. Of course I took them and figured I'd end up using them someday. Today was that day. They are an easy way to clean out the tiny hole in the flat threaded end of caplock nipples.

August 19 is National Potato Day!

Thanks, @11th corps, it's really fun to shoot. It was sold by Hoppe's in the 1980s. Attached is a brochure that a forum mbr was kind enough to send me, and a I bought the gun from yet another forum mbr about a year ago.

Which is historically correct, precut patches or cut at muzzle?

@Capt. Jas. brought up an interesting question about patches during the week-long battle at Ft. Boonesborough. Unfortunately, the lady we contacted didn't have any information. She referred us to another author who so far hasn't replied. Capt. Jas, if you run across the reference, please post it.

How much black powder is too much?

Right you are, less is often a good solution for powder usage. The $25/pound I paid a couple weeks ago would calc to be about $62 with your prices. I'll never gripe again about the cost, and I'm sorry you have those extreme costs.

Which is historically correct, precut patches or cut at muzzle?

@Capt. Jas. My wife is a DAR member and a direct descendant of the Phelps family who lived in the fort and helped defend it during the siege. She has several books on Boonesborough and the siege. While there are references to the women melting pewter dishes, digging lead from the fort's timber...

    How heavy is too heavy?

@TrailWalker that's a real beauty. Did you take enough cash with you to buy the gun carriage too? ;) All joking aside, you found something worth having.

    Rifle plug removal, field removal

@Horizontal Hunter, what you said is a great idea, in theory, but . . . The other day I was shooting alone and dry balled both barrels of my smoothbore SxS pistol. There just isn't anyway on earth to 100% of the time prevent dryballing. Anyone who thinks he's immune just hasn't had his number...
