    Traditions Patented Breech Help

I did this 'in-situ' in a 45 CVA/Traditions - I damaged the barrel threads in an earlier attempt - the plug being harder than the barrel and the burrs from the drum stripped the softer barrel threads. - Had to cut off and rebreech = hence doing it in-situ second time around. Ignition and fouling...

    SMR Pig

We have a lot of Feral Pigs in NZ - they're a real nuisance; I've taken them with a 30.30 no trouble haven't got one with a muzzleloader yet - but I've got a 50 Hawken and a 58 Leman being built in the shop at the moment - both should be deadly, can't wait to try either. Hopefully get a chance...

    Double barrel shotgun

The 'gap' at the breech is fairly normal - allows the right barrel to be unscrewed first then the left can be demounted - if the ribs seem tight elsewhere then its probably ok - 50grams of shot is over 1-3/4oz -seems a bit on the heavy side - I'd stay with no more than 1oz to 1-1/8oz for an...

Can you get 3 aimed shots a minute?

I've achieved it with a patched RB Percussion Rifle -I used pre patched balls in a loading block but measured the powder from my horn - There were witnesses. I was present when Rudyard demonstrated 4 rounds a minute with a Brown Bess; starting empty, using paper cartridges - he actually...

Pawnshop find , what is it ??

Whatever the rifle is - that's a lovely piece of Maple; My 'best' find was a Pedersoli Tryon in 54 which came off an auction site here in NZ - I paid NZ$250 and it came with a mould; caps and a case! Somedays you just have to get lucky. Enjoy shooting your 'Hawken'

    No Answers shoots an underhammer

Hi - my third muzzloading build was a Numrich 'Pennsylvania Half Stock' Kit 45 cal - I made a lot of changes but barrel/lock/stock and trigger guard were as supplied in the kit - it shot like a charm and I did a lot of shooting with it. The guy that talked me out of it is still enjoying it. I do...

    Herman Rupp 1793 Build

For your second attempt - this is absolutely remarkable - keep going!! I'd love to see your next one.

    finish question.

I've used both Raw and Boiled Linseed - Boiled definitely dries faster - on a new build I'll put few coats of Tru-Oil on first to seal the wood and carry on with Linseed (perhaps with a bit of pure turpentine) until I've got the finish I want.

    G. Goulcher Gun - Trying to get info. and approx. value

I agree with Rudyard - looks period to me; also 'Eastern' US possibly made for a smaller person hence the shorter barrel; the checkering adds a quality feature and appears to have been put together by an able hand - Goulcher made a lot of locks for the trade and the trigger guard can be found...

    Help identifying a maker?

It looks very 'OHIO' to me - check out the Association of Ohio Long Rifle Collectors website - www.aolrc.com. But - yes a lovely piece - keep it as original as you can that patina is hard to duplicate once it's gone its gone.

    Black powder or Pyrodex

Amazing! Some people shoot Pyrodex with all the fervour of a religious convert. Personally I will not use it in original piece or a quality custom barrel. In a chrome - moly tube it may be ok - just: Accuracy is not the issue its the residues and burning temperature of the substitute that's the...

    Bullet moulds

Hard to quantify but I feel my 40cal Bedford (Douglas Premium Barrel) shoots 'better' with balls cast from a .395 Green Mountain Mould compared to Commercial swaged .395 ones.

    Maybe a Cheaper way out?

When you leave out the 'washer' in the fore-end of the CVA(Traditions) Kentucky - the front part of the fore-end comes back a bit - this leaves a gap at the Muzzle cap - I fixed this by replacing the Cap (used part of that washer for the front then soldered on a new more conventional rear part)...

    Maybe a Cheaper way out?

Did exactly this to a used 45 CVA Kentucky I picked up some years ago - pretty sure it has a US made barrel. The lock (percussion) was rubbish - an L&R RPL has not missed a beat. A lot of wood was removed and the Ramrod pipes opened up to take a 3/8" rod. That 'washer' in the middle of the...

    Fixable or not?

I'd drill and tap the breech to a 5/16 thread; then make a bushing threaded 1/4 x 28 - I've done it and it works - if you think that 5/16 doesn't make a thick enough bush then go to 3/8".

I agree - don't sweat the small stuff

    RWS #11 Percussion Caps

Down here at the bottom of the world we pretty much have to use what we can get; be it CCI or RWS - even Eley and Remington were available at times. I haven't discerned any difference between CCI and RWS. But we are currently paying NZ$39.99 per 100 for CCI - Schuetzen Powder is NZ$109.99 per...
