Finally Tried Paper Cartridges in smoothbore......

As I mentioned earlier, I've used cartridges a lot for reenactiments. In fact when I was a member of the Virginia 7th Regiments (plural because of different year's portrayals) we would have "cartridge loading parties" in which everyone brought at least 100 empty tubes and we'd fill them with...

Finally Tried Paper Cartridges in smoothbore......

Fun to watch you do this. I am real used to using cartridges because of reenacting. Although they weren't used with rifles, in reenactments we are commonly required to use them as most venues do not allow you to load from the horn. Obviously at reenactments we never loaded a lead ball in fact...

    FOR SALE Musket cases

Any of these cases that you'd recommend for checking on an airline flight. These all seem to be soft cases. Thanks, Dan

    Rust bluing

Had a friend in my reenacting group who was a gun builder. He pickled the barrel of my longrifle. Pickling is not rust blue, but rather a good way to make a barrel look like it's at least 20 or 30-years ols. He used a gutter long enough for my rifle barrel and made a custom burner that went...

Is it uncool to use Pyrodex?

Just don't expect the substitutes to work with a Flintlock because they require a spark about 400° hotter to ignite them than real black powder does.

    Revolutionary War Reproduction Rifles

I own a Traditions Pennsylvania Longrifle and it is NOT based on any Rev War rifles. I specifically bought that production gun because Traditions claims some reenactment group said it was correct for the period. It is not correct for the period. The reenactment group I joined had a gunmaker...

Do you display your flintlock or other guns in your home

Just my Early Lancaster Longrifle. It sits above an antique sideboard in our livingroom: 1000×239 75 kB 1000×239 75 kB

    First post, maybe some advice?

I've heard of folks using a compound load before but that usually uses a small charge of BP behind the substitute powder. Pyrodex actually makes a pellet that has a BP "black igniter" on the bottom of the pellet to be loaded bottom down for as many 50gr. pellets as you need.

    Coating inside the barrel

I've used Stumpy's Moose Snot since 2004, so almost 20-years. Stumpy was a moderator here and some kind of chemist. He had both a Moose Milk that he liked to use for regular patches that would be semi-dry and a formula for his Moose Snot, which he specifically made to use with loading boards...

    First post, maybe some advice?

In the Civil War they were using flip-up sights on their rifled muskets (model 1861 Springfield). It had flip up leaf sights for 100-yards, 300-yards, and 500-yards. Reputedly they most commonly used the 300-yard sight. You would just flip-up whichever one you needed. If I recall correctly...

    First post, maybe some advice?

Since you've turned your Percussion rifle into a flintlock, I have to ask how in the world you get that thing to work reliably with 777 powder. None of those Black Powder substitutes work for 💩 with a flintlock because it takes about a 400° hotter spark to light them up. When I bought my first...

    cleaning my traditions kentucky rifle

My first BP longrifle was a Traditions Pennsylvania Longrifle that I still have. You do not need to remove the barrel to clean your rifle and I wouldn't recommend removing it any more often than perhaps once a year for inspection. I would remove it the first time and apply some car wax to the...

    Cleaning between rounds

Here! here! I'm right there with @45man I mix up some Stumpy's Moose Snot about once a year or two and use it. It's about the consistency of paste shoe polish. I rub some patching material in it until I can feel it come through a bit (liquifies a bit with the rubbing) and then used the...

    How old are ya?

I am 72 now and bought and fired my first muzzleloader in 1969 when I was 19-years old. I specifically wanted to buy an 1860 Army Revolver, but the Hardware store was sold out of it and they talked me into buying a Caplock Pedersoli Kentucky pistol, which I called my buccaneer gun! I shot it...

    round balls don't do well

You know, many years ago (early 2000's) we went through this 1:48 is too fast for round balls and there was a fellow who spoke right up, said it wasn't true, and he backed it up with target shots. He was a big proponent of the Thompson's version of the Hawken, which came with a 1:48. The final...

    Build a Try-Stock

The guns used for fitting a gun are commonly known as a try-gun and they are very expensive. I was the gun-fitter for the Orvis custom fit shotguns at the Orvis San Francisco store for about 7-years before I left late in 1997. A try gun is adjustable for drop at heel, drop at comb, length of...

    Need advice Re, Moose milk

One of the really nice things about it besides the fact that it works so well is that it doesn't freeze in below Zero Fahrenheit temperatures like I had in Vermont nor does it turn to liquid in hot and humid summer days like we got in Virginia. What made me look for something in the first place...

    Need advice Re, Moose milk

I've used Stumpy's Moose Snot since I first learned of it when I joined the forum in 2004. He made it specifically to use with loading blocks but I use it for all my patches. It ends up about the consistency of Kiwi paste shoe polish and I keep it in an Altoids-sized tin container in my...
