    Brass lock plates were used well into the percussion era. I have seen a number of original Ohio rifles with brass lockplates.

    I'd be willing to bet your cleaning patch and jag combination is too tight. Instead of pulling fouling out of the barrel it just crams the fouling into the breech. Use a smaller cleaning jag and your problem will likely be solved. If this works you will owe me a bottle of Mountain Dew Code Red!

    Take the lock out and lightly oil it. Might wish to put a drop or two in the trigger as well. Have you tried backing out the adjustment screw on the trigger? The trigger sets by pushing it forward. If you already know these things that's fine: just trying to help. These are well-made pistols...
