An early and very worthwhile project

Morning. What an interesting and curious pistol. I'm going to guess that this pistol may have started life as a genuine period piece missing it's lock. Later on, it was cobbled together as a Victorian period decorator. But then, mistreated through the later years. The original lock missing...

Spanish 1752 Musket Lock, Polished and Tuned

Hi Nick WOW !!! Great job on that lock. And it appears to now spark like a banshee. LOL Original Spanish Military flintlock - locks - are quite rare to come by. As you probably know, the Spanish Military sometime around 1750, following other European trends, started using flintlocks...

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Bill: LOL Thanks for starting this Thread. Actually, some really good replies from Members. These Spanish style guns with their miquelet locks are still a niche in the muzzle loading fraternity. I don't believe an escopeta style "kit" will be offered anytime in the near future, unless...

    Ottoman Guns

Hi Conrad I "Third" Yours and TobJohn's suggestion. Hard to believe you covered the entire Ottoman Thread. LOL As I mentioned in a previous post, by now it's book length. LOL But I believe we have gathered a lot of information. And the Thread has generated interest from newer members...

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Hi Bill. That was my thinking also. That #766 gun is a plain utility type example that could fit an impression from say the later Colonial period to the early Fur Trade as historically accurate. Rick

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Hi Flint That is a SUPER NICE officer's escopeta. Just a small amount of carving and engraving - not over done. A perfect barrel profile. A great example. Is the barrel smooth or rifled ? True, some do not find the miquelet lock and butt stock design to be attractive looking. And that may...

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Here is another escopeta. This one does not copy any particular original. Just something I dreamed up one day. LOL Again, built by Brian Anderson. This is a total custom using a nice European walnut blank. The brass hardware made by Brian. The lock is an original. A bit worn but...

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

Hi Bill Meantime, here a a couple I own - just to wet your appetite. LOL This would be considered a typical Spanish escopeta of the period. A style used by both military and civilian alike. Built from TRS Kit #766. Builder was Brian Anderson. This would be a good example to copy for a...

Swede Snaplock, oh my what a cool lock ... and such a BIG girl!

Hi Flint. LOL. Yea, she is a beast. But a good example of an early (about 1600) "transition" gun moving forward from the matchlock and wheellock to flint ignition. Various snaplocks like this seemed to have started their development about the same time as the snaphaunce. Just a different...

    Hy-Hunter Buccaneer questions

One other mention with these pistols. If my old memory serves, there is a shallow swell at the muzzle of the barrel. So if you are checking for the actual caliber, you want to measure at least a good 1-inch down the bore. Rick

    Moroccan Afedali Snaphaunce rebuild

That thickness is just 1-2" at the muzzle only. That eliminates the muzzle swell in the original barrel where you have to measure the caliber 2-3" down the bore. It's now nominal bore size from breech plug to the muzzle. Now the barrel can be loaded, shot, and cleaned like any typical smooth...

    Moroccan Afedali Snaphaunce rebuild

Hey !!! Congratulations !!! Talk about arrival at the 11th hour. LOL Can't even tell there is a liner in the bore. Bobby's an honest guy. If the barrel only needed burnishing, he would have done that. GOOD no cone at the muzzle. You don't want it. Old vent hole is now plugged, so you...

    Ottoman Guns

Hi Conrad From what I've been able to learn over the years is that the style of powder containers used throughout much of the Ottoman Empire varied in both style and construction materials. Although some styles seemed to be more prominent in certain regions. Possibly due to the flask style...

    Hy-Hunter Buccaneer questions

Yes, it comes down to how much you like the pistol and want to keep it for a shooter. One thing I've learned in this hobby of ours is that most anything can be done if one is willing to throw enough time and money into the project. LOL Rick

    Hy-Hunter Buccaneer questions

That cost to make a mainspring sounds about right, unfortunately in this case. Sounds like you have three choices: 1. Keep the pistol as a wall hanger. 2. Sell the pistol (at a big loss) for parts. (Sounds like the OP could use the butt cap and screw). 3. Spend whatever it takes to get...

    Hy-Hunter Buccaneer questions

Hi Jappo OK. That's what I thought. You will not find a mainspring to match. I this case, I would send the lock to Jeff Miller as recommended above Not sure Cabin Creek can duplicate the mainspring (?) But you can ask. Jeff can forge a new mainspring to duplicate yours. Pretty sure...
