Whats some things you wish you knew about/had early on when you started shooting these?

Water cleans just fine and it doesn’t have to be boiling hot Patch material cut from fabric seems to hold up better to ignition than the store bought patches Buy once cry once, that deal on your local armslist isn’t always a deal. Practice is more important than anything, even if you’re...

    SOLD Pietta Smith Carbine

Priced at 850 with Free shipping Nice carbine, unfortunately I really don't have much use for it as the club I'm in is frontstuffer only for competition and I'm trying to focus my efforts. I'd describe this gun in great shape aside from the wear on the buttplate. Beautiful gun locks up tight...

    Looky what i got today

nice, I purchased a case of 3F and it’s served me well so far. A little less hot than Swiss but has been grouping well once dialed in and no real difference in fowling for me personally.

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

Worked with @Grenadier1758 today at the range and came to the conclusion that the patches where being damaged by the rifling past the crown. The good news is my Bubba coning appears to have done no real damage to the rifle and I’m no longer getting cut patches from starting the ball. Above is...

Who among us are PIPE smokers?

Just getting to the point I can keep my Cob going without relighting more than 3 times. Any suggestions on an affordable briar pipe to go to next? currently I rotate between three cobs. Seems like prices are all over, looking for something mass produced that smokes well and won't break the bank.

    Average Group

6 Inch group is what I can count on at 50 yards, anything more than that is a blessing. Maybe one day I'll be a "One ragged hole" guy.

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

Pictures are somewhat misleading, all of the holes start offcenter and appear to start from the land/groove contact. I've started and pulled some ball and seen 2 rifling sections in particular seemed to be the sharp offenders. Well.. prior to my Bubba threatment of the rifle. I've tried a...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

Already planning on it just waiting for schedules to align, worked with other members of my club today that I met up at the range who consistently are top shooters. I need all the help I can get! Good news is in dry ball testing since the work has been done I’ve not seen any patch damage like...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

I’ve actually came across your method in my research searching every variation of my problem into google. I think by far you had a much cleaner result. My hope is the same ends are met, I attempted various solutions to smoothing the crown with no luck. So I went atomic. If I ruined the last 1/2...

    Cleaning jag getting stuck

Second that, a true range rod was the best investment I’ve made. Of every doodad and accessory I’ve convienced myself I’ve needed none have proved more helpful in loading and cleaning the gun. Some guns are sold with ramrods that are just begging to be stuck. My wife has a CVA Bobcat, the...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

(50 yards bench) Well my range day with 527 ball did not go as planned, still shredding patches. Still inconsistent groups. Happened to run into a really proficient shooter in my club while I was at the range and well… His advise goes against most of the grain of what’s advised here so either...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

.526 balls now on order, hoping I can get it sorted before my next match. it is an EXTREMELY tight load currently. (short starter requiring several wacks with any patch material) Hopefully this solves my woes but I think the stress of loading is ripping the patch I no longer think its related...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

Unfortunately I've already tried #40 drill, denim and canvas. Generally, I find this material to be among the most durable. I may double back and try the drill again to see how it fairs but originally it was shredding worse than this. I was pretty timid with the scotch brite as it was the red...

Leaving the range even more confused (Load development)

Well the struggle continues, I polished the bore and smoothed the muzzle using red scotch brite, I finished with JB bore polish. Went back to the range and my groups are even worse, still getting ripped patches and everything seems to have opened up. I’ve included some photos of patches for...
