Swiss Black Powder is made entirely with alder buckthorn charcoal and looks rather like graphite. The shooting powder is graded 1-5 under the European classification system, and 1Fg-4Fg using the Anglo-American scale. These classes identify the dimensions and number of corns per gram.

We can also get this stuff, too - Zloty Stok, from Poland, at about 2/3 the cost of Swiss, and not far behind in performance, either. Zloty Stok has a full range of black powders, produced in one of the oldest black powder mills in the world, operating since 1694.

The Aubonne Black Powder Mill (Swiss Black Powder Factory) was founded in 1853. I guess that they might just be 'like' your GOEX product.

Oh. The Minié bullet ought to be a 'thumb push' fit' - it DOES need to engage at least with the lands of the rifling - but in an ideal world the weight of the ramrod ought to carry it down to the powder charge. As noted above, pounding the bejabbers out of it will achieve nothing but sorrow...

The letter 'P' in Pyrodex P stands for 'pistol', hence the fine gradation, said to be 3Fg. And from my own personal experience black powder in a sealed container doesn't degrade. I've shot 120-year-old powder, and over on the Snider forum one lucky shooter bought an unopened package of ten...
