Want to do my barrel in french grey so I cold blued it the other night. Well the blue looked so nice I was afraid to remove it for fear of what I may get. Well today I got up my nerve and went for it. I like it, looks more fitting for a tenn rifle but the blue looked good also. First the...
I have a Lyman Trade gun, Shot 15 shots on Mon. one slight hang fire. I don't wipe between shots, pick the touch hole or put anything in the touch hole. What I did do is replace the touch hole with a white lighting and used about a .055 hole. The smaller touch hole keeps the powder from...
We have black bear in New Jersey no spring bear season though. These two knocked my feeder over yesterday. Last year about this time of year they killed a couple sheep. Guess the feeder is better than sheep, if it's not coyote it's bear, what's NJ coming to. Wish we had a spring season, nice...
What makes a gun HC? Very few are 100%, hand forged barrel and the rest of what goes into building a gun like it was done 200+ years ago. So I think almost all our sidelock are somewhat HC. Some maybe 10% others 90%, but very few 100%. I like historic looking firearms, 100% even 90% isn't...

I think as long as you do clean and lube your muzzleloader you going to do pretty well no matter what you use. It's when you don't clean it well or at all your going to have problems and Ballistol will do just fine.
Took me about 600 shots before I could shoot my flintlock with the kind of constancy I wanted for hunting. Don't know what it was, flash, lag time, or whatever, but that seem like a lot of shoots. Now it just goes off and I don't notice anything.
Ok with the smell, have used it for lube and cleaning. But logic tell me something that mixes with water can not be the best protection from moisture and rust. Barricade for protection.
I have a powder measure with an easy open cap container in the base. Only problem is I shot flintlocks. Seen it in the used been a Dixons and couldn't pass it up.
I taper the rod on my 40 cal to 5/16 on one end and the other is 3/8 and 2/3 of the rod is 3/8. I use a metal end on the 5/16 and just wood on the 3/8. I put the 5/16 end in the stock first. The other day I was using the 3/8 ball starter from my 50 cal on the 40 and it would catch the patch...
I use a a 10x 42 pair of good binoculars and I can see 40 cal at 175 maybe 200 but I don't think much further. That's as far as I shot and not very oftens. Good conditions help a lot.
