    Ugly Stained Stock

There have been a lot of original guns ruined by "restoration".

    Opinions on unmarked .45 rifle

The bore has some pretty bad pitting in it and the breach plug is only finger tight. Over the years I've thought of ways to get it shooting but it's better off hanging on the wall in a place of honor. About 54 years ago I loaded it up with a ball from Dixie Gun Works and proof fired it with a...

    Opinions on unmarked .45 rifle

I like it! I'll admit I'm biased though. The top rifle is my ancestor's 40 cal. that's not a shooter. The one below it is a 32 I built years ago and the one below that is my latest, a 35 cal. I have a 45 in the works as well. Back action half stocks are my "thing".

    Wedding day volley

Weddings are important. A man only gets married two or three times in his life.

    Unmarked .36 percussion rifle

My guess is that the rifling dates it. I don't know of anyone making barrels with the seven wide lands and narrow grooves. I'd like to know if it's a right or left hand twist. If I'm wrong I'm someone here can educate me.

.58 Colonial is a heart breaker

Nope! I'm one of those folks who just can't stand liver. Maybe it's a genetic defect but I either give it away or feed the ravens.

    Load Database

It's a good idea that would take a lot of work to compile in a usable format. Another problem would be that one man's definition of a successful load is different than another man's definition. I don't mean to throw cold water on the idea but I do see some difficulties.

    Unmarked .36 percussion rifle

I think there was a recent discussion here about caplocks with no half cock notch that were meant to be carried capped with the hammer down on the nipple. Someone mentioned having a piece of leather on the cap that would fall off when the lock was cocked. That seems pretty safe to me. I don't...

I forgot to pack the roundballs - but the substitute worked

I killed a duck with a handfull of M&M's out of my smooth bore so I guess his story could be true.

.58 Colonial is a heart breaker

How far did it go after that heart shot? Too bad you wasted the heart and not the liver!;)

    Successful Stalk

That's a trophy worthy of a head mount for sure!

    Three weeks!

Hi Brit, I'm sure you've written your loading procedure on here before but could you please describe it for me? I have a 58 caliber smoothbore I'm still getting acquainted with using 3F which is the finest powder I have.

Rats! I thought this thread was going to be about filling a Mason jar!

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

What shots will drop an animal in its tracks with 100% certainty? The only two I know of are a head or spine shot and a head shot is risky. President Trump is a good example, fortunately, of how a certain head shot can go wrong. The high shoulder spine shot is a good one that will drop an animal...

Davis replacement trigger set for Hawkins style rifles

That's why I much prefer a well tuned single trigger of around 3 lbs for hunting. No clicks and no firing accidentally like I've seen happen with a set trigger.

    Hawken L&R Hooked Breech question.

I doubt that it matters since the 3/8" hole will be full of powder. I used a L&R patent breech on my last build. They had drilled a hole from the left side to provide a flash channel to the nipple and plugged the hole with a screw that was dressed off flushed. When I test fired the rifle and...

    Full stock Hawken

Looks great! My only criticism is the plug screw in the cleanout.

    Smoked Fish Cheese

I like to heat Velveta cheese to soften it and add some smoked salmon and finely chopped pickled jalapenos and give it a good mix then age it for a few days. It's hard to beat it on a Ritz cracker. Alder is not poisonous. The bark will give a bitter flavor if it's not removed.

    How to polish this sideplate

You could maybe use some sacrificial screws to hold it down to a flat board. How to hold some of these parts sometimes takes some head scratching.

OK, so it may not be HC correct.......

54 caliber Rice barrel, Hawken full stock from Pecotonica, Chambers lock, Leman trigger guard and drum and some butt plate from somewhere. The light conditions made the stock look shinier than it is. The front sight has been changed to a silver blade.
