OK, so it may not be HC correct.......

A while back I built a full stock rifle that I thought might look like a "plains rifle" a gunsmith in the 1840's or 50's might have built out of parts on hand for someone who was headed for the Rocky Mountains. I posted a photo of it on the forum and just a few days later another forum member...

    How to polish this sideplate

If it's flat you can heat glue or epoxy it to something flat to hold it while you work on it. A little heat will turn it loose when you're finished.

OK, so it may not be HC correct.......

My theory, although I can't prove it, is that there were a lot of guns put together out of spare parts back in the good old days. Do what you want with them. What is 'hysterically correct" anyway but copying something that's already been done.

PRB thru a mod choke ???

an improved modified ( never heard of it but thats what it measures ), Improve modified is what a lot of the trap shooters around here use in their modern shotguns. You might give it a try if you do any trap shooting.

    Repair or replace

It looks good from here! You made the right choice. A couple of coats of varnish might be a good idea.

    Rain down the barrel?

Use the tape and quit worrying about it. It will also keep you from jamming snow or mud in the bore if you stumble. I always used two layers of electrical tape, one going in each direction with a wrap around the barrel to keep it all on.

    Ultra-Hi Miroku Japan

Here are photos of how I solved the problem on an old percussion shotgun lock I'm using on my next build. The bottom photo shows a piece of brass I soft soldered onto the sear and filed to decrease the sear engagement with the full cock notch. The top photo shows the sear in the half cock notch...

Wemt over to the dark-side briefly!

All your sins are forgiven. Shooting any type of firearm is not sinful. Be advised though that shooting black rifles may land you in Purgatory for quite a long spell.

How do you tune a set trigger?

Do you mean that the hole was drilled from the lock side and not all the way through the stock? That seems like a really strange way of pinning a trigger guard. I can't think of any reason for permanently installing a pin like that. Maybe the builder thought that it could be pryed out with a...

How do you tune a set trigger?

I wonder if that front trigger guard pin was bent and not going all the way through because it was hitting the mainspring? That's the way it looks from here.

    Pennsylvania Black Bear

That's a nice bear. It looks like it's pretty well furred and will make a good rug. Or a bunch of nice warm hats!

    Still reading print media?

How many pictures of 44 Magnum cartridges lined up and such can a man look at in a lifetime? I reached my limit quite a few years ago. I still like the Black Powder Cartridge News which is the only magazine I take. I buy Muzzleloader magazine off the shelf once in awhile but it's getting to be...

    Big Ted....( The 10g)...

Chinese pheasants are one of the few imports from China I approve of. I grew up near the area in Oregon where they were introduced. There were a lot of them around in the 1950's and '60's and few of the farms were posted so we had a lot of fun hunting ringnecks. Then, in the late 60's and 70's...

    Repair or replace

It's a classic example of bad grain flow in the wrist area. There's not much to be done about it but some sort of reinforcement. It looks like a nice stock so maybe a traditional repair would be the way to go. You could always make up a good story as to how it happened.

    RWS 1075 Plus VS CCI #11 Test--Surprise

That's interesting since the average velocity difference of 6 FPS is insignificant. Did you note a velocity spread difference between the two brands? Just guessing I would say that the RWS would have a larger velocity spread than the CCI.

Does that break follow the grain of the wood?

    Lil Brass Frame Bench Rifle

That looks like a very good candidate for a re-bore. It looks like a fairly fast twist and was likely made to shoot a paper patched bullet of some sort.

    Walnut finish problem

I quit steel wool and went to using grey Scotch Brite which is a lot less messy.

How do you tune a set trigger?

I don't have the answer to the problem but don't touch anything with a file until you get the problem figured out.

    Rifling twist rate obsessions??

If you don't know what the twist rate is you can't tell someone when they ask you.;)
