    Bought a Smoker

Several years ago, I found "Amazing Ribs" website. Very helpful from professional and amateur meat cookers. Free stuff, too. Saved me a lot of time/trouble and money. Some funny stuff, too.

What would make you break out your wallet?

No discussin' anything but traditional m/l's on this here forum, so options/opinions will be a bit limited. That said, our niche has the neatest muzzle loaders - beautiful firearms that make your armpits sweat and your hands reaching for Benjamins. Choices are strictly individual. "For Every...

    Vest pocket pistol

We had one many years ago. Lots of fun. Gotta be careful. Will definitely remove any finger parts in front of the muzzle and, if I remember correctly, the nose of the hammer on ours rested on the capped nipple. Maybe not, it's been 30-40 years ago.

    Ramrod Striping??

It's all for fun, so if a man likes a striped ramrod, hand-crafted (what most of the originals I've had over the years), or whatever turns his crank - Go for it but don't expect every prospective buyer to share the enthusiasm. Easier to sell mass-produced M/L's as close to original as possible...

Do you display your flintlock or other guns in your home

Worked burglaries 40 years - hundreds of them. Unless the stars are aligned and the thief was an idiot, really unlucky, or the case involved some traceable item (could be most anything that can be entered into the NCIC nationwide law enforcement system) chances of seeing non-serialized anything...

    .54 for Target?

Back in the day, shooting bullseye matches, we had a scoring aid that enabled the range official to score from the center of the hole, not by "cutting lines". Fairer way of scoring when shooters could use assorted calibers in the same matches. Never had an opportunity to see how scoring is done...

How far does spent patches go ?

Sometimes they like to smolder a bit, then "come alive" with a bit of flame. In the words of a wicked witch ..."How about a bit of fire, scarecrow?" (Wizard of OZ quote). It can happen.

    How old is this powder?

Not to burst bubbles, but the oblong DuPont cans were what we bought in at least the early part of the 1960's. The labels say "1924", but they all say that. One of several I have left has $1.60 price written on it. Hogden metal-cap cans I still shoot from were $3.00. Plastic-stoppered cans are...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

"Won" a coupla internet auctions for two "project" M/L's (both modern) cheap. Frustrated by failure to find m/l stuff, I am now moving most of garage clutter and starting a blackpowder section. This is a daunting task, and failure is definitely a possible outcome. WHERE DID ALL THIS STUFF COME...

    Intro to muzzleloading books?

Dixie Gunworks Catalog gets my vote. Not only a wealth of information, but also a source for many books we all recommend. Hundreds of pages of info in one volume to get your heart pumping. I've found them to be nice people for well over 50 years.

    Who carries a purse?

Surplus gas mask bag's been my buddy well over 60 years. Finally decomposing (like me). Bought a sorta purse on vacation. A lightweight canvas affair, sold where hikers buy stuff, it'll surely outlast my remaining adventures. Only my basset hound, Max, sees my hunting stuff these days. Max don't...

Glad to have another Missourian on board. Welcome from N.E. Missouri.

I am an idiot. Frustrated to the point of wanting to quit.

Got several variables with flint, not so much with percussion. My first store-bought F/L was a Hatfield that didn't like a pan full of powder but fired reliably when less was used and not piled against the touch hole. Simple thing - and I'm willing to bet when you get your glitch figgered out...

    Shot in a pistol

My instructor in LE Firearms instructor school was about the finest pistol shot I ever saw and an excellent teacher. He suggested never to end a practice nor training session on an unpleasant note, but with something 'just for fun' or that the student has already mastered (even if practicing by...

Training techniques to improve offhand shooting.

Basic principles of marksmanship apply no matter whether shooting black powder, smokeless, or no powder. Past a certain point, there's no magic thing to be purchased to propel a shooter into the winner's circle. Dry firing, if done properly and seriously, is effective and builds up the muscles...

    Shot in a pistol

Heck, try it - part of the fun of muzzle loading is experimenting. As mentioned earlier, keeping the shot secured is part of the problem. Finding something to provide a good, solid cushion betwixt powder and shot is also interesting. There are/were makers of wads for revolvers that may work if...

Possible new option for a cap making tool!

I, also, have an interest in purchasing a complete setup to make my own percussion caps. Please include me in the market study. Just what I need to thumb my nose at corporate producers.!!
