    Rebuilding a 1728 French Musket

Oh , just as an FYI. Nick and I managed to figure out that there was a top flat on infantry 1728 muskets.

    1842 Armi Sport .69 caliber

Get a regulation .65 ball. If you wish to run patched ball a .020-.025 patch will get you a good light press fit.

Raw wool instead of flax tow

It’s funny. I just found this exact list. Funny part is, looking up the sources the AI provided they contradict themselves.

Raw wool instead of flax tow

Hemp was grown in Kentucky from way back. It was the #1 cash crop until outlawed following WW2. While it looks exactly like it’s THC bearing sister, hemp will not get you high. And just exactly what crop did we fight a war over. If you say cotton I’m gonna kick you in the jimmie.

What is my new dog lock musket, or doglock musket, supposed to be? And who made it?

Your first question. To put it simply. Not really. The maker used smaller lock bolts because he was more worried about the rammer channel. Notched barrels are not a problem.

What is my new dog lock musket, or doglock musket, supposed to be? And who made it?

Good catch. Also note the weld scars on the cock where the dog catch was added. Someone also plugged and redrilled the lock bolt holes. Should have left them the larger 1/4”/6mm size.

    Dark Finish on standard maple

I have come to the mindset of just letting the wood determine the color from its reaction with the natural stains. I can understand the use of colorants if one wishes to make black walnut to resemble European walnut for historical interpretation purposes.

Just how long did that stain last. Logwood is noted to fade rapidly in sunlight. Last time I did experimenting with logwood dye, it went from blue/purple to gray in 7 days of sunlight exposure.

The very source you provided disproves your point. Everything you gave written since is irrelevant.

    Priming powder for flintlock

I haven’t used pyrodex in anything since I managed to get ahold of real BP in the early 90s. I will never use it in my barrels again.

    French 1766 cavalry pistol started

Got the hammer mostly rough polished. Still fighting the pan on this one. It’s being a pain in the rump. ETA: add picture.

My latest daydream: A Kibler escopeta ...

I certainly have not overlooked the Spanish involvement in our history. Sitting in my parts bin is a TRS kit of the 1757 Spanish musket. Just waiting on ordering a barrel. (still researching the details)

Raw wool instead of flax tow

Yep, worn blankets or trade cloth. Makes since. French trade guns commonly had barrels somewhere in the general vicinity of 20 bore. The balls for them were .56” wool blanket would eat up a lot of the excess windage.

    Beretta flintlock?

Berettas been making firearms for 500 years, so there probably some flintlock types made by them.

There is some good news after Helene

That’s awesome. I received my costom English trade pistol barrel from them about a month back. They did an excellent job making it exactly as I wanted it.
