    1858 Remington Brass real ?

I'm not so sure - I have heard from several quarters (anecdotes, I realise) that the Italian makers put more phospherous in their brass, which makes it considerably harder - 'gun metal', in fact. That said, I would only buy a brasser if it had an historical provenance, such as a Spiller and Burr.

    Be advised....

It is strange how the Cap Supply varies from place to place. Over here, a couple of years ago no one had them and profiteers were selling them on Naturabuy (Ebay for Frenchies into guns) in bags of ten for 5 euros! Now the supply is pretty constant. the prices are still way higher than yours -...

Welcome from France. I am 62, but only got into this about 3 years ago, and my collection grows and grows! Would love to have been around when you were selling some of your unwanted stuff. Ho - hum!

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I got this really old wooden box, ideal for legally containing my BP as the lock is functional. The two side handles, made of Iron, are original - not so sure about the front handle though! The picture behind is a print of the painting 'Le retour de l'Isle d'Elbe' depicting Napoleon's return to...

    What is this 50cal worth?

Two options - the first is to sell it for around 200 dollars, and spend the money on a weeks supply of groceries or a few tanks full of gas (it would sell for twice that this side of the pond). The second option - for this rifle is NOT in poor condition, it needs a little TLC cosmetically -...

    FREE Percussion Caps!

Here in France some people have vast collections of empty tins, and sometimes an old tin can sell for way more than a full tin of new caps.

    A question about pyrodex

That sounds great, I am really envious. I am a bit of a loner in my club; they are happy to have me, but most of the other guys are modernists, shooting mainly weedy little .22s with fancy scopes etc.

    A question about pyrodex

Problem is, I have no choice but to use pyrodex as the supply of BP where I am is very unreliable - hence my OP. I dont really want to use the stuff, but at the moment it is all that seems to be available. Also, my club does not allow for cleaning the gun actually on site.

    A question about pyrodex

Someone on another forum topic said that if you squirt some WD 40 down the barrel of your gun immediately after shooting with BP, it negates its hygroscopic properties and prevents the residue absorbing water and causing rust - for as much time as you need to transport it home and clean it...

What, calling someone's comments BS without giving a cogent counter argument you mean? ;)

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

First time out with my recently acquired .58 Remington Contract Rifle (Zouave) by CVA, shooting Minies. I havent posted a photo of the target because all but three shots out of 15 missed the target altogether! That was at 50 yards. It wasn't until my 12th shot that I realised it was shooting...

Very interesting illustration of the cylinder scenes. I thought there was only the one with a naval battle on it.

    A question about pyrodex

Yes it is the source. Black powder shooting is fine, and you can even buy BP guns over the counter on production of ID.

    A question about pyrodex

@French Colonial: 'I think he is talking about putting a pinch of BP down the bore first and then some Pyrodex on top of that just to get the Pyrodex to ignite reliably.' Yes, exactly. Or conversely, making up a cartridge of similar proportions. My BP guns are all percussion (apart from my...

    A question about pyrodex

Currently BP is difficult to get in France. I still have plenty, but I like to have several pounds at my disposal. To this effect. I have bought myself 2 canisters of Pyrodex. I have heard that this propellant is slightly more difficult to ignite than normal BP. So, my question is: would it be...
