I've had good luck with the Lee 452-160 RF in my Uberti 1858. They start easily with the bevelled base, fit easily in front of 30 grains, and as accurate as needed (easily hit 12" gong every time at 25 yards)

The lazy guy in me just wants to measure the barrel/frame overlap. Add a slightly larger blob of weld on the end of the arbor, and then file it down by hand until barrel gap is exact. Add more weld as necessary. It will be steel on steel and as good as an honest to goodness Colt at that point...

I would go with the steel frame, unless you're part of a rebel Confederacy of states that are low on iron ore and that's the best you can come up with. Even under those cirmumstances, I'd try to get a Colt that was smuggled in from outside. Brassers are cool for their historical connection though

Could the old breach, damaged part be cut off and a new breach / touch hole filled and tapped? Lots of orphan stock blanks out there and a decent rifled section of barrel is gold

I like commercial caps when I can find them, but the tap o cap and "prime-all" has been a lifesaver during the shortage.

Might try a really small acetylene torch too too, if you can get those cones cherry red it should burn off the rust on the threads. I'm not a gunsmith, but that works on old engine parts and other mechanical things. I always try to re use the original hardware on antiques, and I find if I burn...
