    Lead pouring blues

Did you let the poured balls cool off for a long'ish time before you struck the "thingy"? (made me laugh with that one...thanks!). You can strike over the sprue cutter not long after pouring....as in seconds...not minutes, so the lead won't be so hard possibly causing excessive force on the...

    Woodsrunner and Colonial

Have .58 Colonial and .54 Woodsrunner. The Colonial is a big rifle and amazing for it's size but the WR is such a nice balance between barrel length, weight and handling qualities. For a day at the range, the Colonial balances forward better for bullseye work whereas for a day in the field...

    Cleaning up Brass Castings

Yeah, those things are fugly. Cross cut files for roughing down, then single cut mill files to profile and smooth then abrasive paper/steel wool/compound. A set of jewelers files (harbor freight is fine) are great for the corners and tight angles.

Kibler has announced a Hawken Kit in the works.

If he can produce a Hawken half-stock that weighs less than 9 lbs, has a milder radiused buttplate and NO freakin patent breech, I could be a buyer. My GPR is a great shooter but it weighs a ton and I cannot find a happy place with that damned narrow, edgy butt profile. And don't get me...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

When I first read this post title, I thought it was something about the brains of the average democrat/communist but now that it references game animals, it is actually something to be concerned about.

    Iron Nitrate

Yeah, live and learn. I put it on, blush then sand or scotchbrite it back to even out the darker areas vs. the lighter areas. Some straight grain sections can get really dark. It's strong stuff so don't soak it into the wood in large amounts. The sanding dust from taking it down is pretty...

    Need help identifying Charleville

Yes, a strip of suede leather is needed, the width of the flint. A bare flint will not stay put in the jaws. Orientation of the flint, be it bevel up or down, depends on the lock. You just get to figure it out for best performance from the particular lock. If the flint happens to be too...

    Toe Plate on your rifle

the patent breech....work of the devil I tell ya. No kicking, slapping or other forms of kinetic coercion required with a flat breech face.

How do you transport/store .58 minié balls?

And, aligned as such in a mating orientation, they will reproduce overnight. Free mini-minies!

    Need help identifying Charleville

Mic the bore so you know for sure what size ball to look for. Then, decide on if you plan to fire it with cloth patch, or paper (if you want to roll your own military style paper cartridges), or a wad of tow, or a nitro card over top...options here. Once you have the bore diameter and...

    Small pawnshop find

I hear ya. I had a long relationship with them, bought many guns at often very low prices and had no axe to grind with them. I bought my first muzzleloader from them...in the 70's....that kind of long relationship. I didn't want to add fuel to a fire they were trying to put out.
