    Southern Mountain Rifle

FWIW: I have a fine older .50, 38"straight-barrelled SMR, made by J.Garner. It is distinctly muzzle heavy, which took a bit to get used to, but weighs only 7# 5oz. I'm an old fart, but it's not heavy enough to be a problem carrying through the woods. The muzzle weight can make snap shots a...

Anyone here own exclusively muzzle loading firearms?

Sold off my non-BP's, which had gotten too expensive to feed, to get better quality flintlocks and get into reenactment for my dotage.

Question/Survey about setting up a "Small Game" Shoot

Good idea. Just a nit pick, but why specify "steel" if shooting targets into a backstop. It can be hard on barrels.

How Often Did Historic Muzzleloader Get Cleaned

Assuming that basic human nature hasn't changed a lot since then, I would guess that there were some, as now, who neglected them but, if hunting or protecting your life was important to you, you spend the time to be sure your gun would fie when needed. Weapons were very expensive and only fools...

    New member, new old flintlock

Welcome, from OH. That is one pretty gun. Wouldn't mid seeing more of it - or what it can do, once you get used to it.

    How did you get hooked?

I worked in a regional Natural History museum after school. We had lots of old BP guns for me to look at & dream about (yes, Davey Crockett show was in the same general frame), but it was the curator who introduced me to BP and firelocks of all eras. For Christmas, about age 13, I got a...

    Bullet moulds

Running ball is as much a part of the muzzleloading ritual as sharpening your own flints. Either you do it - and enjoy it- or you transpose a cartridge mentality; buy everything pre-made and low effort..in my opinionated view.

    Superimposed load rifle

    Fit those balls tight, boys!

    Did you all see this?

Waiting for "rest of the story". You know, his weapon, caliber, what they were carrying, etc. Never underestimate us "old" folks - particularly older BP shooters! As someone else observed, fired inside a house, ours sound-& look- like cannons. Most look like sewer pipes from the business end...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

If I'm careful: flint's tight & sharp; t-hole picked: pan & flint cleaned, I can count on both of my reenactment pieces will reliably fire upside down- makes a great demo. A full charge gets awkward, but they've done that for me as well - but let's not speak of accuracy.

Beautiful gun; the pattern of the damascus barrel is outstanding.

My new Flintlock Smoothbore need Help

That's a nice looking piece. What's the condition of the bore? The lines remind me a bit of a Fuse de Chasse. .61 seems about right. Mine's .62
