how do you tell a Pieta from a Uberti ?

If all the proof marks and letters are under the rammer it is a Uberti. If they are all over the side flats it is a Pietta.

Trouble loading lee conical into cylinders

ERAS GONE make a proper bullet mould for both .36 and .44. The design of their bullets are taken from original Civil War (how can a war be civil?) battle field found originals. They have a selection of both North and South bullet types rifle and revolver. well made and the bullets work. good...

    Chainfires - the skinny? Maybe....

For information just pop a cap on an empty chamber in a darkened place. Note the ball of fire around the recoil shield. Then tell be chain fires start at the chamber mouth. cover the ball with your favorite lube and check each chamber mouth after each shot. Now go clean that greasy gun. In the...

Trouble loading lee conical into cylinders

Those hard bullets should be a "female dog" to load. C&B bullets are traditionally made from pure straight soft lead. There are sources at some scrap yards, but to save time and avoid trouble I simply buy ingots of 90%+ pure lead from Roto Metals. Hold Center Bunk

Trouble loading lee conical into cylinders

The bullet that was designed to use in C&B guns has a heel that fits in the chamber mouth then rams down engaging the driving band. Eras Gone has moulds that are cut using the shape and size of the original paper cartridge bullet which has a heel. My Uberti '51 Navy is quite happy with the Colt...

Looks like you could use that for a pear burner. P.S. you have to be from the South Texas brush country to understand what is a pear burner. Magnificent!! Bunk

the Slixshot nipples are installed on the 1851 Uberti Navy. Owing to really dry conditions and high heat (4:45 PM 102 in the shade) i just popped caps, The gun has a Wolf reduced power mainspring, but popped all six. As a side note thoe RWS #1075 caps are hot. There was sparks and flash on...

Crisco over the chambers, pros and cons

being fugal, tight, cheap (choose one) my choice is the Eras Gone (Mark Hubbs) one ounce of unsalted lard and four ounces (one bar) of Gulf Wax just common canning wax. I have also used beeswax with lard and it works just as well. Never bleeds oil. There are as many mixtures for bullets or wads...

Crisco over the chambers, pros and cons

Also my experience when I started BP shooting it was with an original 1851 Colt Navy using Du Pont powder and corrosive chlorate caps, which was very long time ago. Crisco covering everything gun, hands, surroundings. No more, to keep fouling soft a heavily lubricated felt wad goes over the...

    I love Snubbies

Howdy. I load the snubbies just like a full size gun. About `5 to 17 grains of FFFg in the .36's and 20 or so in the .44's. My chrono got lost when i moved, but I am more concerned about WHERE it goes not how fast it gets there. Bunk.

Right now at 9:45 outside has cooled off to a balmy 98. It usually hits over 100+ every afternoon. Any shooting is done before 10:00 AM when it is below 90. but we live with it and my few cows are Brahman and tolerate the heat. warmly Bunk

Ballshooter thanks, but I am not willing to take a chance. The 1851 is a convertible (Krist conversion) and can still be used as an unmentionable that dates to 1871. bunk

Central Texas oos dry. All the spring rain we had made plenty of grass. Now it is too dry to shoot my black powder guns. A single smoldering patch or wad and the whole community would go up in smoke. I will have to wait for rain, but will be watching what goes on here. Not making smoke Bunk

    Strange issue cleaning .50 cal

Yes a bare brush can cause trouble but in my ,50 Green River rifle I use a .45 caliber brush with the patch wrapped around it and NO BRUSH showing. The patch is held by the brush after the wet mop has made a few passes. I do use a jag on the Sharps and Smith but you can see through them. Like I...

    Strange issue cleaning .50 cal

It would be interesting to see how many people over the years have stuck jag and patch in their bores. Personally I go with the mop and patch on a brass bush. But a man ought to do what he thinks best. It is just my way not the only way Hold center Make smoke Bunk
