    My son's first muzzleloader deer

I wish it had been a year or two. Much longer and it would have been a decade or two!!

    My son's first muzzleloader deer

I was shocked when I put the bullet on a scale. I thought for sure it would have lost some of its mass!

    My son's first muzzleloader deer

I gave my son a .54 cal TC Hawken some years ago, but between high school, college and a few missed opportunities, he hadn't connected with a mule deer - until this weekend. He had a doe-only tag, and we spotted one in a draw on public land above some orchards. We hiked around the draw to the...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Spent the day making deer burger and sausage from my son's muley!

    Killer Wax

I don't know a thing about bees, other than to generally avoid them - but I got a good laugh about the poison darts and killer bullets. Well done!

58 Colonial and The Bull Elk

Great hunt and great story-telling. Congratulations! Your synopsis reminded me of a situation I have dealt with several times: I frequently hunt a doe-only permit (high-desert, sage brush country), and have shot several does over the past couple years which were in a small group of does...

Fair asking price? TC Hawken kit

A year ago it seemed like anything would sell for a fortune in no time, but I think the market has started to turn. That said, I would guess it would still sell pretty fast for any price under $300. Good luck with it!

TC Hawken Great Plains Conical Fit

Good luck on the elk season! Our's starts this Friday. I got a .58 Kibler Colonial this summer but haven't really gotten confident with it - so it's back to the old .54 Hawken!

TC Hawken Great Plains Conical Fit

I hope that the REAL bullets work well for you. I tried them years ago in my .54 and they were just about impossible to load. They shot well but loading was such work that I gave up on them.

    Hanging deer with hide on.

I see that I just graduated from .36 cal to .40 cal. As my friends on SNL (Coffee Talk) might have said about twenty years ago: "Just give me a second - I'm a little verklempt!" Best regards to all of you!

    Hanging deer with hide on.

Absolutely right! Maybe the formula for hanging time should be some inverse percentage of the circumference of the neck divided by the temperature in celsius.... Never mind - you get the idea! Necchi is right - the those thick-necked bucks make great stories, great photos and great mounts -...

    Hanging deer with hide on.

I lived and hunted in Southern Idaho for three decades - and "learned" to hang a deer for four or five days before butchering. It was cold by the time the deer season came around and I never had a problem..... And yet - since I moved to Eastern Washington a few years ago, it has been way too...

    One among none…

Oh man - I too, have a range ten miles from here with more rules than members, and a fair amount of BLM and state-managed land within 30 miles (both with who knows what you'll find!) I just wish I had the family farm (and the memories) another half-hour or so away. I'm happy for you my friend!!

    Backpacking with longer rifles

I have long rifles that I would love to use - and half-stocks that I do use. (I think mountain rifles were probably "invented" for the very reasons that we have both experienced.) My 62 year-old knees REALLY appreciate trekking poles, which means my hands are generally not available to carry/...

A fine day on the mountain

Great day on the mountain! Congratulations Pathfinder!!

    Loaded for 30 Years

Wow. I always put a cap on a gun and go out to my back yard and fire it at a twig or leaf before I go hunting to make sure the channel is clear - but I can't honestly say I put a patch through the gun every time before I do it. (These are my guns that I personally cleaned and put away.) But...

    Half cock

I'm never really comfortable carrying a capped black powder gun on halfcock when I am hunting with others. It feels like a "safety-lite." I can't even imagine carrying one with no halfcock!

    50 vs 54 FlintLock Rifle

I have both - and either one is more than adequate for the game you are hunting. Unless you intend to cast your own bullets, I would go with the .50 cal for no other reason than bullet availability.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Hunted some Eastern Washington farmland with my new (to me) Pedersoli 12 SXS today. Loaded with an ounce of #5 bismuth over 100 grains of Goex FFF. Hit the first bird - a valley quail (can't bring myself to say California Quail) and after a LONG hike finally flushed a big rooster. He banked...
