    Eye injuries from flintlock?

I’ve always worn percription glasses. I’ve normally had my glasses get dirty shooting flintlocks. When i bought polycarbonate lenses I found that one days shooting destroyed the lenses. I’ve used plain plastic lenses since. I have shot with my contact lenses in with no discomfort. I normally...

    Whom Used a Frizzen Stall?

I have for many years. I teach hunter education in Pa. and encourage the use of frizzen covers aka hammer stall. I encourage the students to take the finger out of a leather glove, fit it and tie it to the trigger guard. We teach the half cock notch is not a true safety on any hammer gun. BJH

    Atglen , PA

That’s s shame Delco.FS was the first club I belonged to. They were the most safety conscious club I ever belonged to. The Atglen I knew when I lived down there, was a really nice club. Best of luck. BJH

    Kibler lock In Chambers fowler?

I doubt you would have any problems with the Chambers lock. I have one on my primary deer hunting rifle. I’ve had zero problems, that weren’t operator error related. Having handled and used both locks all I can say is they are excellent as far as my relatively small number of samples show. I...

    Trigger sear position

Your sear location is probably good, however the trigger pivot should be in the top corner of the trigger flag. Above the existing hole. And the trigger pivot pin is drilled through the stock from the lock cavity side, through the corner of the trigger. then with the trigger held forward the...

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

The one by minwax solvent based not water. I never heard of a second kind.

Woodsrunner, Is this normal for walnut?

Yup normal walnut. I sand to 220-320, whiskering at each grit step. Damp rag followed by hair dryer. Then stain if you want. Wisker again as needed. Touch up stain. I normally flood on a heavy coat of Water lox finish. Keeping it wet for a good hour for deep penetration. Then allow it to get...

    Question Regarding Woman Rondy Attire

I’ve seen a number of lady’s dressed “mannish” in camp for purely practical reasons. Nobody I saw made any fuss. Juried events no. BJH

    Cooking Oils as patch lubes

For my hunting patches I’ve used olive oil and canola oil. I don’t see any difference. I use Simple Green soap for general range work. My guns show no difference in accuracy or point of impact with either oil or soap. BJH

    Can’t find a rifle!

The quality of offshore made flintlocks is a crap shoot. The breaching systems are crap. For the money a Kibler Kit is absolutely a bargain. And the quality of the components is impressive. I’d never steer a beginner toward a offshore made gun. BJH

Historically accurate example of Flint, Full stock, hooked breech, barrel wedges?

Ham385 it sounds like you have better than average hand skills from the scope of your ambitious project. At the risk of disagreement with a friend who I share a mentor with. I still would suggest useing a top tier kit gun for a first attempt. Kibler kits would show you how a proper guns...

weight of trigger pull on a Kibler Woodsrunner

The one and only Kibler Kit I assembled, had a highly acceptable 2 lb trigger from the start. I did nothing special except careful assembly. I wouldn’t be at all concerned. BJH PS In my opinion, a hunting gun should have never less than 2 to 3 pounds of pull due to cold excited fingers. For safety.

    candle lantern

I agree in a way. But I know the level of my incompetence at bedtime. 🙃

    candle lantern

That’s what happened with mine. Maybe I’m over cautious but I won’t have a candle inside my lodge after that.

    candle lantern

I’ve gone over to heaven forbid, battery powered tea lights that flickered like candles for indoor tent use. Out of sight to public view. It much safer especially for folks who like to enjoy a number of adult beverages around the fire. I too have had wax fires in candle lanterns. Luckily in a...

    Dial Calipers

I use dial calipers very often in my shop building guns. Any time I pick up a drill bit before drilling a hole for tapping I check size with calipers. Lots of other uses too. I’m a machinist by background and early training. I use then often for precision lay out work on breech tangs etc. lay...

Ideal single trigger pull weight ?

My number one concern cold fingers in Pa late flintlock season. We sometimes have temperatures below zero. I’ve often been out in temperatures low enough for ice to form in my beard from my breath. BJH

    vent pick question,,,,,,,,,,,,

MBS has manufactured vent pic holders, you can look at their catalog for ideas. Or simply hand bent staples carefully tapped into undersized holes, fitted to your pick. Stay away from square wire picks as they are hard on touch holes. Often a feather was used. BJH

    Best common household lubricant?

My Favorite is Simple Green detergent, in a spray bottle. Used straight. For lubing patches as well as for cleaning the gun at the end of my shooting session. For hunting I use olive oil or canola oil for patch lube. There are many other lube combos out there have fun experimenting. BJH
