    Citric acid is nothing to worry about. Does not attack steel under NORMAL circumstances. I use it to clean rusty steel/iron all the time. It will (under the right conditions) remove rust but leave the parent stee/iron unharmed.

    How about just water, cold, with a touch of soap if you use an oil or tallow as a lubricant. Plunge a patch up and down till clean. Then hot water, plunge a patch up and down for a few minutes. Then use a water dispersing oil such as wd-40 to displace moisture. Let drain a few. Then oil or...

    I agree with @mushka , if you can buy it AND it is in good condition with at least a 'good' bore AND the price is fair, BUY IT! Renegade's and New Englander's are excellent. Better in my opinion than the Hawken models.
