    Escopeta, anyone?

Not all frizzens were grooved. I am holding in my formerly nicotine stained fingers a sensational Spanish pistol made in 1824 with a fancy Miquelet lock and a plain frizzen. Recently I had an opportunity to handle a matched pair of Spanish pistols with Miquelet locks dated 1735 with plain...

    Escopeta, anyone?

The question then becomes "if grooved frizzens offer some advantages", why didn't they carry over to the mechanical design of the "French" flintlock?

    Escopeta, anyone?

Probably the best book on antique Spanish firearms in English is W. Keith Neals's "Spanish Guns and Pistols" For a long period Spanish barrels were in great demand throughout Europe because they didn't "burst". Also the Miquelet lock, because the working parts were exposed was more easily...

Black MZ in a squirrel gun

Oh, come on. I use BlackMZ in 25 and 30 caliber cap locks with great success and superb competitive accuracy. Grain size is not an issue--just volume BP measure it and enjoy it. Toxic? This is a Vitamin C derivative! Hey, if you can't get BP locally, this is the best, least corrosive, BP Sub...

    New show Iron and Fire

WHAT WAS THE GREATEST TV SERIES THAT SPARKED A ML FRENZY? Yup, Davy Crockett. Talk about hokey drama and hokey characters. All the stuff, AND MORE, you so roundly criticize in this new show. Corny and melodramatic, YET, the Davy Crockett TV show sold more ML's to more NEWBIES and founded more...

    New show Iron and Fire

Come on your super critics! We're getting our sport televised to the Nation. It doesn't get any better than that. Believe me, after looking at the poor turnout of shooters at the NMLRA Winter Nationals in Phoenix, we need ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET to attract new shooters into our ranks. The...

    Powder question

Black MZ is accurate, clean and I use it in traditional percussions as well as (DARE I SAY IT ON THIS FORUM)flintlocks! But the lock is primed with 4 F BP.

    Solvent-only cleaning???

What's interesting is Ned Roberts in his classic book, "The Muzzleloading Cap Lock Rifle," discusses, in a positive way, the use of solvents like Hoppe's #9 rather than water for BP clean-up.

CCI Standard Cap vs CCI Mag Cap

A useful rule of thumb is to use a normal cap for BP and a magnum cap for BP substitutes.

    WD40

I use "Collector" which is a long term corrosion fighting oil. I use it routinely on all firearms. It's never failed, even on pieces that haven't been re-cleaned in 2-3 years.

    CCI Response to question

Interesting comment from CCI about their "packaging" issue. Just picked up some CCI caps and now each individual tin is encased in a hard, protective plastic cover. In short, no more loose tins.

Does a "several days'" load exist?

Try placing a dry felt wad over your powder followed by a greased patch and ball. The wad protects the powder for extended periods of time. While hunting for extended periods with that set-up, you also must remember to keep the barrel, from muzzle to the top of the ball, protected with Barrier...

Does the "System" wear bores faster

I shoot a fairly wet patch on the range or a well greased patch when hunting. We all know that tough cloth patches even when well lubricated will wear a bore over time. Is it possible that the almost dry patch derived under the "System" will wear a bore more rapidly?

    Which propellant?

And don't overlook BLACKmz. In the small bores, it burns cleaner than any other product. I use it in .25 and .30 caliber longrifles with complete satisfaction. Grain size is not an issue with Blackmz

    Black vs.American Pioneer Powder

Black MZ is a super substitute for BP. No residue to speak of. Very consistent velocities. Virtually non-corrosive but still requires you clean you firearms as soon as possible. I use it for match shooting and I win a lot of matches!
