Proper Metal Finish for 1864 Springfield

Have a nice 1864 Springfield musket with some minor surface rust on places along the barrel and on the lock plate. Am considering using 0000 steel wool and oil to remove it. What was the degree of polish given the Springfields at the arsenal--220, 320 400?

    Foster style!

I have a .58 caliber smoothbore, swivel rifle by L. Day. It shoots like a rifle out to 100 yards with Lyman's 20-ga. shuttlecock slug. It's a perfect projectile for a smoothbore .58 caliber.

    Rain--Wind--How Did They Fight

The Nov/Dec 2014 issue of "Muzzleloader" has a fascinating story about the battle of Trenton and Knox's artillery. Here's part of the story. "About 2,400 men were ferried across the river with Knox's 18 pieces of field artillery. Such a heavy proportion of guns to men was almost unheard of in...

    Rain--Wind--How Did They Fight

Good responses all! What I'm curious about is that after that first "protected" first shot with a flintlock in the rain, was the fight Over?

    SET TRIGGERS/LOCK SET-UP?

What is the difference in setting up a Lock trigger system in which you can cock the hammer and THEN set the trigger as opposed to a system in which you MUST set the trigger and then cock the hammer?

    Rain--Wind--How Did They Fight

I'm out there in the field today trying to prime my pan with 25-35 mph gusts that blow the priming charge right out of the pan before I can close the fizzen. Then it begins raining. The flint is wet, the pan is wet, the frizzen is wet-- nothing is working. How did flinters deal with the rain...

    Bore Brushes

I finally emptied my bag of bore brushes looking for a nylon .45 caliber bore brush with a core twisted through the threaded shank. There were Midways and Brownells--some with twisted through cores and some cores just crimped into the shank. Aha, then I noticed that the Brownell bags of brushes...

Disappointed with 54 cal round ball.

Good thinking if you're shooting a modern, expanding soft point or monolithic copper pill at 2800-3000 fps, but we don't see that degree of tissue damage with a PRB. The concept is because we don't have violent expansion and a lot of 2nd'dary pieces of lead and jacket material ripping about...

    Guns of the Southwest Territories

Yup, it was probably a double barrel percussion shotgun or a military surplus CW arm of any type. For a complete history, read "Arming the West" by Herbert G. Houze, available from Mowbray Publishing @2008. Really well documented account.

Disappointed with 54 cal round ball.

A couple of thoughts. The typical pattern for a deer heart shot is for it to dash off in a wild run and pile up within 100 yards. I used to hunt deer with engraver and ML historian, Lynton McKenzie. We typically shot original English "express" rifles--50-62 caliber. Lynton insisted that the...
