    Deciding What To Shoot

With muzzle loaders it is usually one at a time, maybe a long gun and pistol. I really don’t like cleaning them so sometimes I pick one because it is hooked breech and I can “pump” it clean. Have been known to choose a smooth bore just because they clean easier. Did I mention I don’t like...

    Best powder value

Most economical powder I have bought and used is $5 a pound Pyrodex RS from the close out aisle at Walmart. Have bought several that way over the years. I have also used Pyrodex P, Goex 2f, 3f, & 4f, Scheutzen 2f, 3f, & 4f, and Swiss 2f, 3f, & 4f. I have purchased but have not used Triple 7 3f...

36 cal Kibler SMR and maxi ball

Well, I actually have both a .36 Kibler SMR and have some .36 maxi’s but have not gotten around to getting them together with some powder yet. Someday, along with a lot of other projects. Love the Kibler with PRB loads though.

.56 Smoothbore Shot Patterning and Bare Ball

Glad this thread got bumped as it reminded me to post about a discovery. While the balls I posted about above did come from a “.562” mold, once I got around to measuring them they are actually a little smaller. Most are around .560 with some going as low as .558 and as large as .562 at the...

Duelist1954 Lecture on 18th Century Smoothbore Shooting

What is boring is reading a thread about boorish behavior. I watched Mike’s video and overall enjoyed it. I have learned a great deal watching his other videos. Yes, I would generally rather “be out doing it” but realistically I can’t do that 24/7. There is some downtime at home and I would...

Using Bondo to position secure Butt Plate; acceptable or butcher job?

Fourteen posts by the OP not to tell us who did the work. If you have two rifles from the same manufacturer and they both have problems please tell us who they are for the benefit of the forum members.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well, it was yesterday now but I went to our monthly shoot at the club. Got there early and threw some Hawk & Knife until other folks showed up. We shot the Archery Trail Walk and I did my best yet on the course. Went over to the Woods Walk and enjoyed some fine accuracy with my .58 smooth...

    Best round ball mold?

I have never had an issue with aluminum molds cooling too quickly. In fact, they get too hot for me. I usually run two molds for just that reason. I am running one and the other is “warming” on the edge of the burner (Turkey Frier stand/burner). When one starts taking to long for the sprue...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Tossed the Hawk some while waiting for the lead pot to come up to temperature. Finally got my distance on the Hawk about the time the handle broke. Cast 75ish .570 balls, one at a time with a nice borrowed Lyman mold. Shut off the gas and went to replace the Hawk handle. With new handle in...

    1/16th touch hole

Replaced the vent in my (Lyman) GPR with an allen wrench RMC liner and it seemed to help. Drilled the vent on my Pedersoli Trade Gun to 5/64th and it works great (I intend to work on the inside cone some but have not gotten around to it). But overall I usually solve my ignition issues by just...

Opinion for fixing damaged Lyman 57SML peep sight

Had that exact same thing happen on an unmentionable I won off gonebroker years ago. As I recall I was able to straighten it without a lot of drama. I seem to recall Lyman had the part as well. A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

Curious, How do you clean your Pinned barrel Rifle or Smooth bore?

Come home from range, remove lock, insert toothpick, fill bore with soapy water (use small handy funnel and towel) and stand gun up on floor but clamped vertically in cabinet makers bench vise so I don’t knock it over. Get stuff out of car, go rest or something. When I feel like it go out and...
