    Haggis Day

That book on Chicago Meat Processing was The Jungle by Upton Sinclair but you need to remember he was an avowed Socialist and the whole last chapter or two was how Socialism in America will solve all our problems. About the time that book was written one of my Grandfathers came over. Saved...

How did the 2 fletch arrows fly?

    Haggis Day

Glad I asked- a lot more interest than I ever imagined. I've used a pig's stomach since they show up in a local market but that's about it. The "lamb" flavor sort of soaks through all the meats and that's the taste- to a degree, lamb, blanched onion, toasted oats- actually pretty good. In any...

    Haggis Day

January 25th is Robert Burns Day. You toast some oats, mix with "Lamb Innards" and chopped onion and stuff in a lamb/sheep stomach. "Chief of the Pudd'n Clan" . Those thirty Scots. In any event not easy these days to find all the ingredients.

    Primitive Arrow(s)

Check with the folks in Cherokee NC. They can help. Years ago they had a pamphlet with blowguns, war clubs, etc. The various tribes made arrows differently so you need to get the correct info. The Cherokee in OK- their culture got mixed with all the other tribes- to a degree so stick with...

    Gunsmithing screwdrivers

There used to be shrouded screwdrivers. I actually "invented them", was all excited, went to check for any existing patents and found out I had invented something that already existed. I made one myself. The idea is a tube operated by a spring. You need to exert a little pressure to move the...

Why not grind some down yourself for an exact fit.

    Colt revolver ident.

The ejector rod ends under the front sight so 5 1/2" even though-upside down it looks like a longer barrel. The rounds in the belt seems large so 45 Colt or 44/40- hard to tell. It looks the there is a screw to hold the grips but I'm not sure when the screws started being used. Off hand, folks...

    Javelina Hide?

I'm contact a taxidermist and ask them. You could just tack out the hide and turn it into rawhide. The skulls are pretty cool, I wonder if the whole thing (Skull) could be put into a Plexiglas block or some such presentation.

Longshot, but is anyone familiar with these initials on an antique knife?

What makes you think the knife is old or original?

    First crude horn

For the next horn try Buffalo. It has a fibrous texture you can soften in boiling water and put a round plug into it- not too tight- just to round. On cow horn you need to boil in oil- Fry Daddy, etc. to soften the horn. It is a two step process. You need some tapered "dummy" plugs to put into...

    Hand Meat Saws......

Green bone saws pretty easy. I just use a regular hacksaw. You may want to take the paint off the hacksaw blade. A more expensive "meat" saw is just a hacksaw with a higher frame.

    Period correct cabin

Eterry: that sounds like what I want. There was about 80 acres for sale south of Sanderson but the roads were so rough it took an hour to get there. In any event only 40K which was a real deal and the land was all cut up so you could hide a small adobe and no one would be the wiser. I am...

220 or 320 for barrel browning prep ?

I've done #240, #320, and down to #600. The rust that is formed has a certain texture that is about the same regardless of #320 or finer (IMHO) so why go finer than #320. I agree that the roughness increases surface area and rust. NEVER scrub the surface, just one wipe and if you miss a spot-...

    holes in inletting

I think bedding compound is strong is compression but not sure about tensile, that is, filling up a void with compound may or may not strengthen the area- I don't know but off hand, I don't think there is an issue, just leave it be. Seems okay to me.

    2022 summer sausage project

I really like making sausage, good therapy. I didn't know you could get a smoke taste with the fibrous casing. What breed of dog is that?

    Period correct cabin

My experience has been that a lot of jurisdictions have no idea what I am talking about as far as a "historic" cabin. A few years ago there was an operation in Kansas- a buffalo hunt. It was pretty cool. You came into town, switched into your PC clothes and parked your vehicle at a local diner...

That's what I was wondering, if you put down that it is a storage shed, etc. Nice cat.

    Fur, Fortune, and Empire

Eric Jay Dolin author, anyone read this book? There is a lot written on the fur trade as it extended from Montreal upriver into the Great lakes and then into NW Canada but not that much about the US (Ohio, Indiana, ILlinois, Mich, WISC, etc. and yet there are countless towns with French names...
