    Ice Box

Well, the reason I asked is because I like to visit any historic homes that may have tours, etc. and except for Monticello (Thomas Jefferson) I can't remember any that had an ice storage facility. I checked the net on the 1802 invention of an ice box for a home and the whole thing got me...

    Ice Box

I posted on another thread about Thomas Jefferson and ice cream and that got me thinking. This would not be for long hunters and mountain men but would apply the American Revolution, etc. When did the ice box come into use? Mountain man Nathaniel Wyeth of Boston was in the ice business before...

    Trap Spring Knives

Back when I was a trapper I saved a couple of beaver tails but never tanned them. Seemed pretty thin. Nice texture so maybe glue over thicker leather.

Cheap India powder horn customizing options

They are cheap and the horn is usually very thick so you can file away, etc. Some are not round (plug end) and need to be formed. Well worth it as a way to practice on horn work.

    Trap Spring Knives

Okay, I always wanted to make a sheath using a beaver tail. I thought the leather would be rather thin. How well does it work for a knife sheath?

Appropriate cylinder gap for Colt revolvers

I thought about .006 was about right. A lot of the tight gaps are for modern rounds with higher pressures and escaping gases, etc. Although the percussion should not "spit lead", a lot of them do and there is also more fouling than modern guns- a tight gap could lock up the action.

Help please. Rifle shooting way low

True, if you look at original rifles the front sights were very close to the barrel but a lot of replicas have very tall front sights.

    Tipi Poles

One other thing, a teepee is probably the BEST tent for a semi-permanent camp but since it takes a while to set up and represents a lot of bulk to move around, not the best if you are "on the trail".

    I got a screw loose!

I'm late to this conversation. FIRST, with normal tightening the screws ought to stay put for at least 100 rounds. That is, at the range, if you fire 100 rounds you shouldn't be having to re-tighten the screws. If you do, then the revolver just has poor tolerances and you might need lock-tite...

    Tipi Poles

Yeah-I always heard pine was the choice for poles. I think Francis Parkman in one of his books- when he was traveling with the Sioux, said they headed east to the black hills to cut new poles. On a large teepee the diameter of the poles at the base is fairly thick. I heard that years ago...

    Belt Hooks On Pistols

Brazosland has a very good point. When I first started using a belt hook, I thought you ran the hook between your body and belt and the pistol was on the OUTSIDE of your belt. As such, the pistol is flopping all over the place. Now a pistol without a belt hook was just tucked inside the belt...

    Tent Decision help

I'd go with the wall tent. lower walls seem to be what is seen in a lot of paintings. And...for whatever it is worth...A cot makes life as comfortable as at home but what would be great is a low cot closer to the ground than the typical army cot. Anyone have any plans? The lower cot would make...

    Size Barrels ?

On the 13/16" barrel. My issue has been the "space" if you dovetail in tenons and a front sight, etc. Is there an issue?

    Belt Hooks On Pistols

I built a kit with a belt hook- just like in photo. I REALLY don't like them. I'm planning to take it out and make a plug to replace the mortise in the stock.

    Trap Spring Knives

Since we are historically oriented, not sure if such ever existed at the time.

    Trap Spring Knives

Don't take this the wrong way but there seems to be an interest in knives made from trap springs and I don't understand why? Is it to use scrap metal to make an inexpensive knife or is there some property in the steel that makes them desirable knives? Historically, the springs from the old...

Buckshot loads in a 28 gauge smoothboe

Go with Ohio Rusty. The whole deal is how the pellets stack and you can't use modern information because the hull reduces the diameter of the space available.

    Rust bluing

Some thoughts.... A. Laurel Mountain Forge is virtually fool proof. Only a couple of things. 1. Don't go beyond #320 grit on preparing the barrel. If you go to #600, etc. the metal does not rust as well. With EITHER the final surface will be the same. You don't get a smoother surface by...

    Rust bluing

On the rain gutter- how to you handle the ends to keep the water from leaking out? Solder? I have a shotgun barrel I might want to rust blue.
