    Source of Thick Steel

Against better advice I think I'll try to dovetail a steel insert into a Brass pipe tomahawk. I need a small piece of high carbon steel maybe 3/8" thick 1 1 1/4" wide, and 3 inches long. Any suggestio0ns on scrap steel with high carbon that would work?

    Breech plug install ??

It seems like a really difficult tash, the face has to bottom on the shoulder of the bore and no gap between flat and plug AND the flats on plug and barrel in line.

    Shot Wiping

Depends on if you shoot a PRB or conical projectile. Some of the "bullets" fit so tight that you have to wipe between shots. Also, if you use a wad, that is powder charge, wad, PRB- the wad can push a lot of fouling down the bore before the PRB but since it is over the powder- it doesn't plug...

    Gun Flints

Thanks, I'm really glad I asked the question. As a total Newbie I never knew that the quality of a lock can lead to more shots per flint. What I am thi9nking is, a good quality lock pays for itself by being easier on flints. Next question- I know nothing about knapping flints but it sounds...

    Percussion Hammer Problem!

Off hand- I'd hold off bending the hammer if it used to be okay. Like rafterrob I think I'd look to how the lock is set into the stock. If it was working okay to start- any fouling, etc. in the inlet?

    Gun Flints

Up to now I've been a percussion shooter. On flints, how many shots do you get before you have to put in another flint or knap, etc.? What do most of you do? Knap (and how do you do that ?) or just put in another flint? Thanks.

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

My Colt Navy 36 I use about 20 gr and seat with a "crunch", jut so you don't think I'm a "big load only" type- I have a single shot 50 cal. that I backed off to 37 gr as seeming to be best.

    Walnut!

Well, in any event there are woods such as coco bola where the dust is toxic (t least for some folks) so I would not use for noggins, spoons, etc.

    Walnut!

I walnut toxic? Whenever I work with it my hands get stained. So, cutting board??? On the stocks, walnut is a standard choice, why would it crack?

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

Sorry to disagree but heavy charges (not "hot" but at the top of the safe range) are more accurate in many situations. That's been my experience and also with others. No harm to try some. Obviously if flinching is an issue- that is an entirely different matter.

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

One other point, you ought to pick a charge that proves accurate. Sometimes heavier charges are most accurate. Test various charges.

Do I need a filler for a 20 grain charge in a .44 cal. Cylinder?

I've never heard this discussed so...IS there a difference in brass frames? Are some more bronze or simply stronger? One guy I know says he has shot 25,000 rounds in a brass frame without any damage. Another issue, it would seem a round ball creates less internal pressure than a conical shape...

    Haggis Day

Speaking of Orangemen, some of my relatives lived in Syracuse NY and Syracuse University's football team was "The Orangemen". The leading businesses in the area, etc. were all started by Orangemen (mostly). The University recently changed to "The Orange" I asked why and was told the "Men" in...

Smoke tanned and suede seem sort of close to me- what is the difference in appearance?

    Hobby Lobby Leather Quality?

I've been looking at it, off hand- it seems like a pretty good deal. Leather has gotten really expensive.

    Looking for some leather advice

2=3 oz. is pretty thin for a bag but you can make it work if you line it with pillow ticking. Use rubber or barge cement. The pillow ticking create a light inside which makes it easy to find small items. For a cheap strap get upholstery webbing and fold it over. It is about 3" wide, a double...

    NMLRA 3-Year Memberships

Here's some thoughts. I dropped my membership because all you get is a magazine for $50 per year. Ridiculous. There are no shoots in my area so the rest of the "benefits" are irrelevant. In my opinion if you engage in the competitive shoots, you ought to pay the full cost and the annual...
