Agree with last two guys. I used to pinch until I got some new nipples that the caps fit- far better.

    Thought I would share this...

    Yes, very nice.

    Starting charge and Hunting Charge

I wanted to also note DO NOT USE A WIRE BRUSH. As you push in the brush the wires will slant back toward the muzzle. When you try to pull the brush out- it jams. The only thing you can do is very slowly rotate the brush to try to get the wires more in a sideways position and very slowly you...

    Wooden knife sheaths?

Well, I sort of gave up on the metal tips- beyond my skill level I guess but I took a look at the Carl Russel Book- Firearms, Traps, and Tools of the Mountain Men. There is mention of wood sheaths so they are pc.

    Wooden knife sheaths?

LRB- I tried making a throat and tip and it didn't come out very good however I really like the look. Years ago I bought a cheap India made sword and that was where I got this idea of wood with kid glove thin leather over it. For those who might want to know. I used leather because that's...

    Wooden knife sheaths?

Wick Ellerbe might know. There were a few sheaths that looks like those used on swords, with a metal collar and frog on the top and a metal tip on the bottom. I think the leather was kid glove thin and attached over a wood liner- so wood sheath. Like some swords.

    Prickly Pear Jelly

Well I'm going to cut down the recipe and make about 3-4 half pint jars and just keep in the refrigerator, not actually can them. I've never made any jelly.

Period correct knife for fur trade in western Canada 1800-1815

Same, I use elk but sambar is considered better. On the friction folder, you keep your thumb on the button or tab to prevent accidental closing. If you just have to have a locking blade, such are apparently pc with a flat spring on top of the handle with a ring to pull it up and unlock the blade.

Period correct knife for fur trade in western Canada 1800-1815

FOLLOW UP- I did a quick web search. BE CAREFUL on whatever is presented. I checked out the documentation on a lot of things and in many instances there isn't any. On the following, stay with the half tang styles and you ought to be good to go...

Period correct knife for fur trade in western Canada 1800-1815

So, you are basically going to be in Canada. That would be NWC/Hudson Bay Territory. I'd think about a scalper with a 6-7" blade. The butcher knives were more of an American Mountain man choice, probably because John Jacob Astor of the American Fur Company came from a family of butchers. The...

    Caliber question.

What everyone is saying is a ball about .10 under bore diameter is sort of the traditional, go to choice. Then play around with patch thickness.

Blue jean material for shooting patches...........

That's sort of my bias against Blue Jeans -a lot of them aren't 100% cotton.

Blue jean material for shooting patches...........

You can buy a ton of pillow ticking at JoAnn fabrics or Wally World for a couple of dollars. Why use anything else? It's like trying to make a knife out of a questionable piece of steel, why? You can get state of the art steel for just a few dollars per blade.

Velocities & ballistics calculator for PRB

What's all the flaming about? I READ THE LINKS. I guess I should have been more definite. I was just calmly and politely pointing out that on the info provide- say the FFg 100 gr load at 100 yards yielding 457 f.p.e. and a lot of newbies might look at that and figure it was too low to kill...

Velocities & ballistics calculator for PRB

Word of caution. No one would take archery equipment and apply modern ballistics. Quite maybe a poor example the fact remains that modern ballistic, such as mushrooming bullets, etc. doesn't apply that well to muzzle loading. I think the best bet is asking for field experience from others.

    Why .40 cal?

The common feel is the 40 is very accurate. Some of this may depend on the barrel. 1" 15/16", etc.

    Prickly Pear Jelly

That sounds like a good idea. I think I'll make half "regular" and then the 2nd half add the jalapenos.

    Prickly Pear Jelly

I have never made any. I don't want to necessarily can any, just make a few jars and keep in the Refrigerator until used. Have any of you made any? When do you harvest the pears? Can you use unflavored gelatin to make the jelly? On the sieve? What is that? Cheese cloth? Something else?

    Install Steel Bit

Thanks to all- my big concern was if I could ever dovetail the thing and get a good fit. Well somebody else's Christmas present.

    Install Steel Bit

Some years back I bought a brass pipe ax. It is a poor pipe and a poor ax. In any event there are a few of these that have had a steel bit added. The bit is often dovetailed in place. I am wondering if I should try such a modification. I would make some sort of filing jig but even then I...
