2024 cap update, bad and the bad

Yes, my dad was Slovak. We lived in a Czech ( Bohemian) neighborhood. He was very adamant that he was NOT a Czech.

    Montana Heritage Season Opener

Talkin' about the pressure to open MT traditional ml season to inlines...Yes. I received a letter from FWP a few weeks ago, asking for feedback. Said they had requests to do just that. They said the rationale was the shortage of roundballs. You would think they would have said the shortage of...

    To the older guys…

Reminds me of when I was 19 years old and in the army back in the early '70's. Lots of guys had oriental wives - Thai, Korean, Philippino, Vietnamese. The old sergeant sat me down, and said to me, "Jim, American women are spoiled rotten. You find yourself an oriental woman. They really know...

    To the older guys…

I have had mixed results trying to be a good father. Not all my children and grandchildren know and love the Lord. On the bright side, they all love firearms. Part of that is due to the culture here in Montana and Idaho. Anyway, I too have a document listing each gun. Info includes when I...

    Best lead for casting ball?

Hello from Salmon, Idaho (Elmer Keith Country)

Welcome from the Bitterroot Valley. I lived in Idaho Falls in the 80's. A couple of my buddies decided to jump in the truck and drive the 150 miles to Salmon to visit Elmer Keith. They knocked on his door though they were a bit apprehensive - afraid Elmer might meet them with a 44 Mag and...

    Why .40 cal?

Well, I don't own a 40 call though I hope to some day - maybe my next rifle. I found it interesting that Jim Bridger owned a 40 cal Hawken. He probably owned other rifles as well. This particular rifle was given to him by a friend when he was about 50 years old. It is currently on display in...

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

Not trying to argue or insult people here, just to clarify the realities of hunting with ml west of the Mississippi. Last fall, while hunting near Glasgow, MT, I stopped the truck to chat with a couple of hunters. They were using 7mm Magnums and such, as most shots that presented themselves...

What "fun" targets are your fav's

I think I screwed this post up. Anyhow, it is supposed to go with the photo of a guy shooting a ml. The photo might be here or else this turned into 2 posts. Oh well. Hope you will enjoy hearing about the 2022 Fall Hunt sponsered by a local ml club. One member made 20 of these phywood...

    What happened to Lyman Muzzleloaders?

Joined this forum about a month ago. I have made a few comments, but no original posts yet. Don't think I know enough compared to most of you guys. I enjoy the forum and check it every day. However...when these threads stray from the topic and enter the realms of social and political commentary...

Which state is the best for ML?

Montana is as bad, if not worse than Idaho. Last year they opened a ml season for the first time. You can use any of your unfilled tags, but it is after the general season. Too much wide-open here. Everybody hunts with calibers like Creedmoor and 300 Win Mag. The game is shot out. What the...

    Broken ramrod

A few months ago, I saw an old guy reloading at a match. He used numerous small strokes of the ramrod - each one only 2-3 in long until the ball was seated. He commented that he had never broken a ramrod. Since then, I have conciously emulated his technique.
