    Kibler's Hunting Pouch

I'm hoping a moccasin kit will be next.... :) When I started in the '70s it seemed we all made stuff ourselves, now I see guys saying they want a .50 because they can get balls easier than a .54...Dang, I think I bought my last store bought balls in the '80s...I can see a fellow wanting to...

    Hello to all

That is a beautiful piece!! I use 30grs FFF for squirrels and have shot up to 60grs FFF accurately...Enjoy!!

I don't think Dad's Hawken is going to hunt

Still some things you could do, simplest is to try an over the powder wad, change patching and lube...Probably followed by lapping, then by having the barrel refreshed (recut and lapped) then, the most extreme is to replace the barrel...These guns are pretty forgiving, keep trying...

How do you pull back the cock on your flintlock?

Surprised nobody mentioned how to pull back the cock while riding the sear...As you know, if a deer is near, they can hear the click of the trigger when the cock is pulled to full cock...To avoid this, pull the cock with your thumb, have your index finger lightly holding the trigger back, once...

How tight to patch a ball

How deep is the rifling in the barrels? Is it button rifling which runs fairly shallow or cut rifling, specifically made for round balls??? Hard to draw good conclusions with only part of the equation....

How did American forces reload in battle?

Some of you gentlemen should back up and read up on Kings Mountain, Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse...Each of these battles had a significant amount of rifles and men who knew how to use them.. This conversation has gone round and round, with few historical references...There were dozens of...

    .45 for squirrel? Powder charges?

When my .40 was a .45, I used 40grs FFF for squirrels, turkeys, etc and bumped it to 75 for whitetails...

    .40 for Squirrels?

Well, most of us Southern Boys grew up taking head shots on squirrels with open sighted .22 rifles...I do the same with my .40... I never cared for the brains, we had pigs for that...I load 30grs FFF in mine for them...As far as deer, if that was all I had in my hands and was hungry, that is...

    Proper shot size/source

Grew up using #6 for all, Dad used 4s...You could just go with 5s and use for all, I've done that for squirrels, rabbits and turkeys...

    New Member from North Carolina

Welcome, also from the Piedmont...I've seen plenty of Jamestown rifles in my past, don't buy originals so I haven't kept up with collectors...There is a book on North Carolina Longrifles, written by Bill Ivey, a local attorney (retired) here in Asheboro...You should get one of them for your Dad...

Rifle Recommendations for a New ML Hunter

One more comment, you will be fine going with a traditionally styled side hammer instead of an inline, in fact, many of us started in this hobby years before the modern inlines were made ... :) If possible, find someone local to show you the ropes, that will help...
