Still some things you could do, simplest is to try an over the powder wad, change patching and lube...Probably followed by lapping, then by having the barrel refreshed (recut and lapped) then, the most extreme is to replace the barrel...These guns are pretty forgiving, keep trying...

How deep is the rifling in the barrels? Is it button rifling which runs fairly shallow or cut rifling, specifically made for round balls??? Hard to draw good conclusions with only part of the equation....

I use SnoSeal... Have used Stumpy's Moose Snot and Track's mink oil but SnoSeal works just as well..

When my .40 was a .45, I used 40grs FFF for squirrels, turkeys, etc and bumped it to 75 for whitetails...

Welcome, also from the Piedmont...I've seen plenty of Jamestown rifles in my past, don't buy originals so I haven't kept up with collectors...There is a book on North Carolina Longrifles, written by Bill Ivey, a local attorney (retired) here in Asheboro...You should get one of them for your Dad...

One more comment, you will be fine going with a traditionally styled side hammer instead of an inline, in fact, many of us started in this hobby years before the modern inlines were made ... :) If possible, find someone local to show you the ropes, that will help...
