    knapping the flint

You ain't calling Musketman a "standard deviate" are you? :winking: I mostly use Frenchy flints in my Tule with good luck. Also tried the English ones and they worked real good too. I haven't knapped a flint in a long while, by the time they don't spark good they are usually worn down pretty...

    range of a .58

I was at a gong shoot once with my 36 flinter. A hit was sort of "dink". The 50's hit with a good "ding!". When the guy with the 58 connected (he wasn't much of a shot) it went "CA-LANG!!!" No doubt in anyones mind if it was a hit or a miss. ..

    Neat trick for rear sight

Can you pop that bb off without messing up the barrel finish? Just thinking of when I might be in a "front sight only" situation.

    Neat trick for rear sight

Sorry for not including more details. The match was a "fun shoot" so there wasn't any rools. The magnet is sort of a temporary stick-on rear sight. I still haven't tried it, but the guy that does uses it to control elevation only as it does move around some from shot to shot with recoil. I...

    Neat trick for rear sight

I saw this at a shoot a couple of weeks ago. One guy shooting a smoothie against all the rifle guns was using a magnet for his hind sight. I might give it a try until I learn to point my smoothbore like it was intended. ..

    Windage in a smoothbore

"one guy reported shooting 10 shots in one minute...." I can do that too, with 10 guns ;-) "and hit a man size target at 50 yards" have to be a BIG man for me. ..

Grains weight to the ball for 20-gauge?

    try this: diameter x diameter x diameter x 1505 = grains a 20 bore works out: .615 x .615 x .615 x 1505 = 350 if you run .60 rb in that 20: .600 x .600 x .600 x 1505 = 325 grains ..

    which caliber

I too shoot a 24 bore fusil. Use .570 balls with felt/fiber wads (no patch). I tried patched .562 RB but it was a hammer tight fit. I find that .535

    Broken ramrod in barrel

30? if there is a next time (or if you run a ball down without powder) use 4 or 5 grains. that way you don't have to chase your jag so far down range when it comes out of the barrel:-) ..

    The Best Smooth Bore

Lets not perpetuate this old wives tale: I bet it was started by a woman looong time ago, "What? You already have two perfectly good clubs in the back of the cave!" (If my wife is reading this, I'm just kidding dear.) ..

    new fusil

tg what size round balls did you use in your .58 cal/24 ga? i have a 24 bore fusil (maker unknown) that i am trying to figger out. there is NO WAY a patched .570 can be loaded ( well maybe in a clean barrel & with a big hammer). a .562 is extra tight with my normal .015" patch, .535's slide...

    Wads

Robert Lube the wads. You need something to keep the fouling soft & make loading easier. A quick dip in melted "Crisco" works for some. I use a beeswax/olive oil mixture. Let the excess drain on some newspaper. The cards load dry. I assume you have the Circle Fly type of 1/2" fiber wad and over...

    French Flints

I e-mail ordered a dozen flints on Monday morning and sent John a check Monday afternoon. Today is Thursday and my flints are in hand. They look as good as any I have seen, English or otherwise. The proof will be in the shooting. In my opinion, John is a gentleman and a good businessman. I...
