    To the older guys…

After I am dead I could really care less if my family keeps the guns or sells them or whatever. I’ll enjoy them until then.

    Dixie Gun Works Flintlock pistols

A bunch of the Tower style flintlocks were non-firing guns that could be made to fire. Some needed a flash hole drilled other didn’t. Some had non-sparking frizzens that needed to be hardened on the face or replaced depending on the metal used. Others were perfectly fine and shootable though...

    In my father’s safe. . .

Those are interesting. Thank for sharing You might give the guys at Euless Guns and Ammo in Hurst or the Winchester Gallery Gun Store in Fort Worth a call to see if they can get you going in the right direction too. As mentioned already one of the various muzzleloading clubs might be able to...

Mince meat, fruit cake and figgy pudding

I like fruit cake. The fresh stuff not the ones passed around between family or friends every year. But I haven’t liked the mincemeat pies I have tried. I don’t remember having figgy pudding. So I can’t say about it.

Made some videos of me knapping gun flints, for those interested.

Nice going. Thanks for posting. Yeah another hobby to add to my long list of hobbies that I don’t have enough time for already.

    Howdah gun's ballistic handicap?

The original Hawdahs fired the big .577 rifle cartridge. Granted there is a significant loss of muzzle velocity but you get a big fireball, big bang noise too. Plus that big bullet traveling at sedate velocities still has a big knockdown stopping factor as well. It was as mentioned a up close...

    Dixie Gun Works

I really liked visiting their store. I wound up going crazy and spent much of my vacation money there too. Oooh I gotta have that too kind of thing. Yeah I used to peruse their catalogues. There catalogue was what I used to learn to shoot my first muzzleloader too. Many years ago they...

    Leaving Rifle Loaded

There have been numerous cases of people firing old antique loaded muzzleloaders. Many of these had been loaded for decades to more than a hundred years too. They still fired their load. Normally black powder is a inert substance. It can still be good hundreds of years later. Oil and moisture...

It looks good to me. Try it out. I don’t see a problem with it.

Why not. I see no reason it would not work. Biodegradable too.

What to do with this abused model 1842 musket

If it is shootable, I would also leave it be. It is a neat getting gun and it looks like it worked well for that purpose. Heck it was probably still being used after WW2 too.

    JoAnns #40 cotton drill

I always go and check out the clearance remnant section for leftover pieces. They almost always have some cotton and or denim there to sell.

    How do you eat them

I am not a big fan of grits but I do eat them if that is what you get on the plate. Butter and some salt and pepper works for me. But then butter and some sweetener might be even better though. I never thought about trying that before.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

Is that by groove or land? .308 by land and .311 by groove. Then of course some guns had .313 to upwards of .316 groove size too. For example the 7.62 x 54R Russian cartridge. Or the British .303 is another et example.

What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

I would say 15 yards. But maybe a little farther in some cases. The birds are sure smart though. The ones that have survived being shot at won’t get that close to you.

Ball calibers and diameters make no sense.

Don’t forget that the ball size will change with the type of cloth or paper you use as a patch for it. Same thing for conical bullets too. It depends on the bullet design. A hollow base bullet might be a bit smaller for a more loose fit than a solid base bullet. A target rifle might have you...
