    My 1863 Starr.

I posted some time ago about the conicals I cast from an original Starr mold. I wonder how they would shoot but the mold is too fragile to get hot enough to cast a decent batch of bullets. If there were enough interest from others I would pay for a custom mold to that pattern. So, @Colonial Boy...

    Ach-so! Thanks for the clarification!

SOLD - Pending funds Nice 1803 Harper's Ferry .54 Flintlock Rifle

I’m still trying to understand this. I see no opinions in this thread. @BigSkyRambler in his first post said he did not know who the maker was. One of the photos shows the DGG logo of early Armi San Paolo products and I posted as a helpful bit of information, for which BigSky thanked me and then...

SOLD 1839 Colt Texas Paterson Replica

Loading tool. When the barrel is removed the tool is inserted into the wedge slot in the arbor and the tool becomes a loading lever. Essential for reloading a Paterson. Also hard to find these days. (Ask me how I know.)

    Musket Nipple Replacement Question

Near the height of the pandemic I found a hoard of CCI six-wing musket caps that have fired consistently in every gun I’ve used them, including original and reproduction muskets and breech-loading carbines. I bought 6,000 and I’ll have a long way to go to use them all, so I’m obviously...

DCG Mark on 1803 Harper's Ferry Rifle

I just looked up this that is short and informative: https://www.capandballrevolvers.com/armi-san-paolo-dgg-and-euroarms.

    Old Maynard/New owner

I finally had a few minutes to report my experience at the range - for anyone who cares. Maynard reduced load case, 25 gr Scheutzen FFg. Maynard reproduction bullet (photo below) .517±; 356-357± gr. Target distance: 32± yds. Fired a total of 21 rounds from a bench, muzzle rest only, two...

    Old Maynard/New owner

Coincidentally, I’ve been listening to a hoot owl outside my window for the past 30 minutes. :-) And yes, the Maynard was indeed fun. I’ll tell y’all how fun tomorrow.

    Old Maynard/New owner

Smokepole is correct - I bought 100 bullets from DGW for $54.50 plus $11.50 shipping. A bit pricey but I just wanted something to shoot to try out the gun. I just got them Friday and loaded the cartridges that night. The bullets were a bit tight to load in the brass that I got from S&S so I’m...

    Old Maynard/New owner

When I first posted I made a bit of an overstatement about the case hardening colors on my Maynard. The bluing is mostly there and a deep color but the case hardening colors are faded. They are evident everywhere they should be just not real bright. Considering that most of the examples I’ve...

    Old Maynard/New owner

And mine’s not nearly as pretty as @smokey Plainsman’s. But isn’t it all about the shooting? Owning old firearms is cool but being able to shoot them - now that’s cool. So Cynthia (if I may call you that - you may call me Kim) get that thang out and shoot ‘er. Then please share results. I...

    Old Maynard/New owner

I finally picked up cases and bullets and loaded 50 cartridges tonight for the range tomorrow. The bullets came from Dixie Gun Works and seem very close to the pics of originals that I’ve found online. I’ve been a bit disappointed with the accuracy of my other carbines, a Smith (Pietta), a...

Hi Rick. I'll take that but I'll have to send a PM after work, in a couple of hours if that's ok.

    Musket loading

This is what I’ve gathered from a lot of reading but I don’t pretend to be an expert: The English Pritchett ball in a paper cartridge (three wraps of paper instead of two as in the U.S. made Burton/Minié paper cartridge) for the P1853 Enfield was paper patched and was very accurate. Look for...

    Sharps gas check plate!

Both the theoretical and actual function of the original Sharps gas check plate design have been a mystery to me. My first Sharps reproduction was an IAB 1859 “sporting” Sharps. (It had no sleeve in the chamber.) I bought it about four years ago. It jammed up due to fouling on the third round I...

    Maynard carbine help/recommendations

I picked up a very nice Maynard carbine a week ago. I promptly ordered brass cases and thought that I could just use bullets from my Eras Gone Smith carbine mold. But after slugging the Maynard bore I think I need a new plan. The Smith bullets are .520+/- but the groove-to-groove distance of the...

    Old Maynard/New owner

I saw a likely unissued Maynard at the gun show today. Bluing and case coloring appear 95 percent-plus. Small crack in the stock about five inches long but doesn’t go through - eminently repairable. I took it home for under $2K. (Boy I hope I didn’t pay too much.) Now I need to find brass. My...
