    Yes, looks like a vent hole to me, haven't seen one drill in the breech plug like that.     I'm rebuilding an 1870 unmentionable (here on this site) but all the small parts are interchangeable with 1861-1870 Springfield muzzleloading muskets. Small parts like the but plate, barrel bands and trigger guard screws and lock bolts. Thanks for the response. steg49

    Just pulled the barrel AHU UDR INDIA E/5083 11/10/89. These have been used by the previous own but the locks only required minor cleaning, so I hadn't pulled the barrel. All was clean on the underside. steg49
