I Have This Other Old Rifle

Notchy Bob. Thanks I hesitated posting photos as to not to distract from the OP - but figured a photo was worth 1000 words to Badginger. Let’s keep with trying to help him than getting off course.

I Have This Other Old Rifle

Your pointed tang is like my William Douglas rifle (Cocke Co. TN). Although you have 2 screw holes. Unfortunately, your trigger bow shape isn’t like my WD - so doubtful it’s by him. Nothing on the top of the barrel?

I Have This Other Old Rifle

Doesn’t look converted from Flint.. that would date it earliest as 1830’s. In todays world, its hardware & lock plate is more E. Tennessee than Kentucky (Pennsylvania). Good to keep on the family..

Good stuff. Interesting rear sight position differences. 2nd from bottom might be my choice. Thanks

    Rifle Identification Help

Based on my original early John Manton percussion, the other Manton’s I’ve handled and the 2 Vol books on Manton - the Op is Belgium made imported lock (imposter) and nothing to do with Joseph.

    Homemade Nipple Wrench

It will most likely break on a stuck/hard to remove nipple - due to the soft metal. Ted Cash ratchet style with replacement sized does well for 2-sided nipples. I prefer 4-sided nipple flats and a 19th Century British style nipple wrench. Made a spare nipple and wrench recently for a friend.

    QUESTION OUT THERE..

Absolutely, if there is no indication of any issues. I’d start with a low powder charge and inspect with each shot and confirm there’s no issues. Bring it to the HawkenClassic!

    why no bench stuff?

Canal Fulton & Friendship are all I can recall for big Slug Guns.. Most of the old shooters were machinist and have passed away. Webb Terry (RIP) was always great to talk to, he shared info openly - many did not. Not very practical for sporting use with a 30-50# ML -IMO, other than a ballistic...

    Soddy Daisy Jack Duprey value?

Nobles books show Soddy rifles (Pikeville shooters) predominantly being percussion. Also, 20th Century photos.

    Best lead for casting ball?

Thin sheet lead and roof vent from old houses is great soft stuff. Older wheel weight - clip on are generally soft. New glue types and most unknown lead ingots are unknown. Hydrochloric acid in batteries isn’t anything you want to play with.

The display of original Hawken, Gemmer and MO rifles was incredible. The Ashley Return guys telling their 3 month journey was another highlight.

    Foot Pounds

A ‘hard cast’ heavy conical, like wheel weights, will kick harder than a pure soft lead cast one.. I’ve experienced it. The shot of your shotgun is not a solid, add cushion wads?, plus the loads surface area is 2x that of the rifle and it’s corresponding powder column is 1/2 the rifle in...
