What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I just made up three experimental "junk mail cartridges" out of... you guessed it, junk mail. They consist of 80gr of Goex Fg, a .65" ball, cheap glue stick, and the essence of "lazy". In the future I will dip them in some bees wax and tallow mix to make it easier to load when fouled. The...

    Shooting Marbles?? Is that smart?

For fun. It's his gun and his money, don't be such a "stick in the mud".

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

I found it! Please keep in mind, this camera is 8 years old and I'm no master at taking pictures. The pistol: The flash hole: The old table I shoot at: The lighter loads that failed to make it through the table:

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

The flash hole measures about 0.087". The FFg powder did leak a little but I think you could still use it if you were careful when loading. However, Fg powder also seems to provide higher velocities, So Fg powder may just be the best for this gun. I'll need to see if I can dig up my old...

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

Sort of a surprise that more people didn't find this interesting (My interests are strange). Guess these military smoothbore flintlocks don't draw the same attention as their rifled counterparts. Accuracy with the 70gr load was about 3-4" at 10 yards and when the gun is clean, it shoots pretty...

Original powder charge for the French An IX pistol?

    Help with my balls.

What an odd-looking firearm. A 1 in 16 twist would lead me to believe the gun is meant to fire conicals. If you wish to try round balls then a .360" ball with a 0.015-0.018 patch

    Recommendations for first flintlock

This may sound counter-intuitive, but I have come to the conclusion that pistols make better "first flintlocks" than rifles. It's easier to start with the flash pan further away from your nose in order to avoid the "flinchlock" effect. But if you must start with a long arm, the Pedersoli Scout...

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

It's sunny out today, so I took my Lab Radar chronograph out to the yard and fired various loads across it. The gun is a Pedersoli An IX and the powders used were Shuetzen 3F and Goex 1F. The balls used were TOTW .678" (with pre-lubed 0.01" patches) and hand cast .65". This wasn't the most...

Will the bottom fall out of the custom build business?

I recently tried to have someone build a Rifle Shoppe pistol and was quoted $2000+ by a couple builders. This was a simple military flintlock with no chance the pistol would ever actually be worth $2700 (kit was $700), so I ended up passing.

    2f in a large bore

Plenty of people use FFg powder for 8 bore and 4 bore rifles.

    New Pietta Remington Navy

No idea on the front sight, but I wouldn't recommend buying the gun. Pietta's QC has been pretty bad recently.

WANTED WTB - Pietta Smith Carbine OR Decent Original Smith Carbine

Many of the forums I'm a member of do not allow people to post in the classifieds or PM other people until they reach a certain post count (ex: 25-50 posts). The PM restriction keeps most people from creating new accounts just to scam people.

WANTED WTB - Pietta Smith Carbine OR Decent Original Smith Carbine

One guy sent me a photo of a gun with a drivers license and paper (with my name/date on it) photo shopped into the picture. Be VERY careful before you send anyone money!

WANTED WTB - Pietta Smith Carbine OR Decent Original Smith Carbine

Sketchy people surf the classified section here, had the same problem when I was looking for a An IX pistol. Beware of photo-shopped images as well.

    Cleaning or Lack Thereof?

@Bunk A patched ball in my musket, HERESY! ;) (I am way to lazy for patched balls though... I've been spoiled by paper cartridges) I will give this cleaning method a try though. On my way home from work I'll pick up some cheap veggie oil and try using that instead of water for my next cleaning.

    Cleaning or Lack Thereof?

Very interesting read on that website, but I wonder how well it would work with smooth bore guns firing sub-caliber balls. The fouling builds up fast and is very thick with these guns. So much so, that in order to fit a jag down the barrel I need to fill the barrel with water and let it sit for...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Just sat down with the lead furnace and cast sixty-five 65 caliber balls to keep the musket and pistol fed. It's moments like this that remind me why frontiersmen preferred to use the smallest caliber gun they could get away with. To make sixty-five of these round balls takes 3.7 pounds of lead!
